Need Some Help from the Pros on My Verm-Coir Grow
    #14209365 - 03/30/11 12:36 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Alright, so here's the situation... After 10 days of incubation, I spotted cobweb mold. I went ahead and decided fruit. Perhaps an uninformed decision on my part? I don't know, I panicked and figured some fresh air would kill the mold. I also sprayed the sub with diluted peroxide.

I just can't seem to get it right. I trashed my last grow due to a bacterial infection. This one seems to be headed down that same road. The only bulk grow I had success with was my first one, to which I added a frosting layer, and that seemed to work.

One last thing to note- there was almost ZERO colonization- I'm baffled by this. I incubated that sucker at 75 degrees the entire time.

In the tub: A brick of coir, 2 quarts of verm, 2 quarts of water, 1 cup of spent coffee grinds, 1 cup of gypsum, 5 quarts of WBS

I'll upload some pics very soon. In the meantime please feel free to chime in.

It is extremely common for new folk to mistake the mycelium coming thru the surface for cobweb mold.

If the concentration of h202 was high enuff, you set it back a ways.

If you think this might be the case, just put it back into colonization for a bit.

Yea for the longest time I though that fluffy mycelium growth was cobweb.  Sprayed my cakes down too much with h2o2 witch ended up being completely counterproductive.

Shit, man! Not exactly what I wanted to hear. If it was mycelium, I guess there's no point in worrying about it now. So back into incubation?

Naw just give it a few days to pin.  I'd just mist it with a 1:20 concentration of h2o2 and water to ensure that it wasn't cobweb.  1:20 shouldn't harm the mycelium much at all.

Lots of people have trouble with coffee in their subs too, you might try leaving that out next time if you are still having contam problems.

If you're using coir the mycelium grows REALLY thin sometimes, I thought it was cobweb too because it looked like all the pics I had seen...

Lo and behold, it wasn't.

Like he said, Coffee is prone to contams leave it out for the first attempts and you dont have to worry too much about contams.
You want to have succses before you try to rise the yield.

H²O² is also poisonous for myc.
If there is no reason, like cobweb, dont spray it to the sub/myc/cake or whatever.

If it's not cobweb, then no peroxide. If it is cobweb, then full strength peroxide.

Agree on the coffee...until you have a handle on doing grows with subs that don't encourage mold as much, I'd steer clear.  And god forbid you get a contam breakout, you'll have a hell of a time getting rid of it.  Trust me there.

Guys, sorry about taking so long to upload a pic. Didn't know about all the troubles associated with using coffee grinds, will definitely stop doing that in future grows.

So here we go: mycelium or cobweb?

That's just myc. If it was cobweb it'd cover the entire surface in 24 hours. Shit is super fast.

Hell yea man! You don't know how happy I am to hear you say that.

Guys, this is my third bulk grow. I'm used to seeing mycelium grow behind glass, which flattens it. This stuff looks quite different, more cloud-like, when growing into exposed air. Talk about curve balls.

You guys

Try growing in those little 6q shoe boxes made of clear plastic. Lots of stores carry them and they're cheap. You can see through all sides so you know instantly that this aerial myc that breaks the surface is healthy growth because you can trace it from the substrate pressed against the side up through the coir frosting layer.

That's the way I've come to be calm about this type of stuff.

One more question- Been incubating for 11 days now, and as you can tell from the picture, there's barely any consolidation. There are 4 or 5 of these blobs of mycelium scattered around in a 67qt tub.

Put it into fruiting or continue incubating?

is that a casing, or is it just spawned to substrate

That looks like millet and milo there on the surface. And if those grains haven't vegetated after 11 days, you've got a bad tub on your hands. Probably a bad substrate / bacterial contamination.

Unless I'm seeing wrong and those are pieces of coarse verm.
