couple backpacking questions
    #14215550 - 03/31/11 03:41 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

how do you get water when you're out on the trail? what's the best method? i'd be heading out for 2 nights, 1.5 days at a time usually, should I just bring water? can anyone recommend a good / cheap water filter? i don't wanna use those nasty iodine tablets.

and can anyone also recommend some good ultralight cooking wares (pots and stuff)

and how about flashlights as well. those are the 3 things i'm still working on, water, light, food. any input appreciated

The best method would probably be a water filter.
There are also UV pens you can buy that supposedly sterilize.

I use mostly MSR stuff. They make great stuff.

MSR MiniWorks EX Filter
http://cascadedesigns.com/msr/water-treatment-and-hydration/expedition-water-treatment-and-hydration/miniworks-ex-microfilter/product

I think there are cheaper ones, but this one is repairable in the field. Which is one of the main reasons I bought it.

For a flashlight, get a good headlight. No brainer for me really:

Petzl Tikka Plus 2
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=petzl+tikka+2&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=17937485241543766589&sa=X&ei=V_mUTa2kH4fmiALYiKGBCQ&ved=0CEEQ8wIwAg#

I don't know if there's a version 3 by now or what...

Boiling water is always an option. For short trips I recommend bringing water and having water purification tablets on hand for a survival type situation. Streamlight makes the brightest lightest flashlights hands down.

Didn't even think about this but definitely.
You should probably get a stove anyway. (MSR PocketRocket is the cheapest.)

Yes 100 feet or so downwind.

You can rope it up on a really high branch in a bear bag.
Or there's also bear canisters that you can use.

Here's a pretty good pic:

Basically, they're saying that you piss, store food, and cook food downwind from camp.
And set up camp 100 feet from streams, creeks, trails, and such.

quick question : if I'm hammock camping am I gonna need a bag that's rated lower temperatures? i can't decide between the 15 degree or the 32 degree. will the extra 17 even make a difference with the hammock? the avg. low here is about 50 in the summer at nights.

My 30 deg sleeping bag has always slept hot.
Gets down to 30s and 40s in spring and fall here.

I'd recommend cheaping out depending when you plan on camping (e.g. spring or fall in Idaho might be a bit diff than Cali).

I mostly eat dehydrated meals, and bring snacks and other foodstuffs that don't require a lot, if any cooking. Just add water, heat up and you're good to go. It's simple, hassle free, as well as light and cheap. You can dehydrate your own meals for around 2-3$. This site has a lot of good information and recipes for dehydrating your own meals.

I use the Katadyn "Hiker" model water filter and it works fine. I wouldn't write off the SteirPEN's however. In a review in "Backpacker" magazines gear guide issue, they gave it rave reviews. It kills all microorganisms, bacteria, protozoa and viruses so that's a plus. Ultraviolet technology is what's used by municipal water treatment facilities, so it definitely works reliably. The bonuses to the UV Pen is that it's very small compared to a filter, and about half the weight (3.5oz). Apparently they are rated for 8,000 treatments on the bulb and treats up to 100 liters per battery. You have to have a widemouth bottle to use it though and it treats 1 liter at a time. $100

I need a new lightweight cookpot myself, if you find something awesome let me know. I would recommend Fozzils flat packing bowls, dishes and cups. I love the set I got, they handle boiling water fine, are real easy to pack and super lightweight. Cheap too, $8

Clearly, it was just an interesting piece of gear I like and thought I'd spread the word. I have no water boiling reccomendations cause I'm in the market for a pot myself.

I do want one of these though, and I could probably get away without using a pot then.

short answer: yes

I'd go with the 15 degree synthetic if you plan on sleeping in anything colder than 40.
Keep in mind in a hammock, you are off the ground and have free air moving under you.. those hammocks are breathable so any moving air is going to be pulling the warmth right from under you. As a rule you are going to be sleeping 10-15 degrees colder on "average" then if you were sleeping on the ground.
If it gets cold you need something under you to block wind and insulate or you are gonna be cold. A good synthetic sleeping bag provides some basic level of insulation under you. Down bag is basically worthless as insulation in a hammock since the side your weight is on has virtually no insulation value.

Some people use a thermarest or closed cell foam pad, they get the job done but its bulky and kills some of the comfort of the hammock.
The best is the various underquilts they sell, which is basically just like a down sleeping bag, form-cut to fit the underside of your hammock and hug it tight like a cocoon. Some people make their own. With a good underquilt you can hammock camp in freezing temps. But in general if it only gets around the 40s-50s you should be fine with a decent synthetic sleeping bag.

For water you want to invest in a good quality water filter. MSR or Katadyn basically.
You cannot realistically carry all the water you need, so you need a good way to filter/purify it from natural sources. A good filter will get rid of everything but viruses (which you don't really have to worry about unless you are in a 3rd world country) and chemical pollutants. Boiling for 5 minutes will kill anything but wont get rid of chemical pollutants. so therefore never drink water that is chemically polluted. A good rule of thumb to follow is if there is living stuff in the water, plants growing.. fish swimming, it's probably ok. But always filter or boil. Or both if you are very concerned about the source.

yeah i bought the 32 degree over the 15 simply beacause it was $30 cheaper

i'll have to try it out and if im freezing i'll check into those underquilts

These guys make some of the original/most popular underquilts... but as you can see they aren't cheap at all. Cost more than a hammock.... But they are designed for hennessy's. They also have the Mt.Washington

There are cheaper ones out there if you look.. some people make their own but I wouldn't really try it unless you are confident in your skilllzzz. But all it basically is, is a down bag, with water resistant shell.. with a certain cut so that it fits the hennessy snug. A snug fit is important because without it you'll get air gaps and cold spots. I never really felt like blowing 300+ bucks on some insulation, and never really camp in super cold temps.. so when it is cold I just use a closed cell pad and that works good enough at blocking the wind/cold, although it does make it less comfortable in the actual hammock. But if you do a lot of winter/cold weather camping it's probably a good investment to get an underquilt.
I found with my bag, any temps lower than ~45 and I need some kind of padding under me, your mileage may vary

For my cookset I have a single titanium pot and the lid is a frying pan.. not the exact model but something like this

mm that cookset is pretty cool, hopefully i can find something a little cheaper, thanks for the links.

Man up.

Didn't think about the major differences between hammock and bag though.
My bag is plenty warm, but I can see how a hammock could get a lot colder.

The 32 bag should do just fine for 3 season camping.
Actually if you got the 15, that would probably be too warm for most 3 season camping.. you'd probably wake up sweating a lot. I know I did a lot in my 15 degree bag anytime other than winter. And waking up drenched in sweat sucks just as much as sleeping cold, some people might think it's worse.. because then the sweat evaporates and not only are you now cold but also wet.
Ideally, you'd want a 2/3 season bag for most of the year and a winter bag for the cold camping.. but we can't always have everything.
Worst case scenario, if it gets too cold.. you can just buy like a $10-15 closed cell thermarest pad or something for backup. They even sell huge crappy cheap ones at walmart for like $5, and you can just cut them to size fit inside the hammock. As long as it's providing a barrier between you and the wind you're golden inside your bag, provided it's not -40.

http://www.rei.com/product/778926

I bought this bag last year towards the end of the season so it got a fair deal of fall use and it's kept me nice and toasty with usually no more than just my base layer on. I too sleep in a Hennessey I wake up sweaty sometimes but with proper ventilation I can usually avoid it. For bottom insulation I have been using one of those 5 dollar pads from walmart cut to 3/4 length and the corners were clipped. I recently bought a thermarest but haven't been able to hang with it yet.

On alot of sleeping bags the brand name and the advertised +15 isn't always what you get.. They have a European Norm(EN) rating that provides a wider range of Extremes and Comforts..
