Cobweb Mold (I think) in Rye Bag (Pics)? * 1
    #14212322 - 03/30/11 10:08 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hey all,

I recently began growing for the third time about a month ago. My first time was.. awful (Trich all over, using PF tek and popcorn)(total yield was 2 small <tiny> shrooms from one cake), and the second even worse (sour rot, no yield) using rye bags.
I blame poor sterilization and lack of research\immaturity on those.\

Now for the current project:
Afoaf was willing to make Rye bags for me a cheap cost. I'm a little short on extra money and will be until next fall, so I figured I'd give it a whirl (couldn't afford Shroomery sponsored bags). I got a syringe from Hawkeye, and was all set.
>6 1-pound bags.
Upon getting the bags, I noticed there was no inoculation port (expected i suppose, used band-aids/tape) but there was a filter patch
>I was very cautious, sanitizing my room, then using alcohol before/after every inoculation(2cc's each), on my hands, bags, everywhere.
>Growth was going good until I decided to break them up. They grew faster but I started to notice blue spots in every bag(Around full colonization though) and Metabolites.
> I started browsing the Shroomery, both to find an answer and to educate myself on a variety of things. I found that spores from mold will stick to a Q-tip.

--START HERE IF YOU DO NOT LIKE STORY TIME--

> I was going to wait until they were ready to be fruited to check the mold, because I was 90% sure it was bruising. I began to smell the bags as a test and one or two put off an odd(not horrible) odor.
> I couldn't wait, so I decided not 1 hour ago to sacrifice my least colonized(90%) bag to test it for mold. I rubbed the hell out of a couple blue spots, and got nothing on the Q-tip, but I noticed that the top mycelium was very wet and kinda looked like a cobweb:shocked:!

Here are two pics taken using my web cam from the top of the bag (not perfect quality but decent).

I think it looks like cobweb mold except it is not 'poofy'. It looks like really wet mycelium. And there is the smell..

Now I noticed somewhere that RR told someone to dunk there cobweb-molded cake in a solution of Peroxide/water. I'll search for and post the link if you guys want.

Are my bags savable? Can I try burning the cobweb mold off?

Thanks,

--Willoughby

First, the Q-tip test is outdated info and doesn't help confirm or deny the presence of contamination.

It's tough to tell from the pics, but i'd venture to say you're probably ok. The top surface of colonized grain can get a little fluffy and wispy at times and I bet that's what you're seeing. Cobweb will look like it's forming above the surface of the substrate and will be noticeably more grey in appearance.

Keep an eye on it though. Cobweb mold grows extremely fast and will overrun an entire tub in a day or two, so you'll know soon one way or the other. See if you can't get some clearer pics in the meantime.

If you do still suspect cobweb after a day or two, you can treat it by misting with a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide (right out of the brown bottle). The cobweb will "melt" away on contact. Repeat if necessary, but keep in mind H2O2 is toxic to the mushroom mycelium too, so don't go overboard with it.

Honestly, I'd be more worried about exposing those grains to open air before they were completely colonized.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it. I opened that bag because I have 6 in total. Four are fully colonized so I'll birth them soon.  This one was the least colonized one, and I felt pretty sure it was contaminated so I didn't want to wait any longer. Also the uncolonized part is at the bottom, which I thought would help prevent contamination. I don't think I can do any better, but in the mean time, I'll see if I can get some better resolution.

The stuff I think was mold on the top came off on the Q-tip, does that affect your opinion at all?
