    #14214863 - 03/31/11 01:28 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Bag seed plant...3 weeks into veg...under t5 130w 5600K lamp...16/8...the plant is about 4" away from the bulbs...using fox farm ocean forest soil and using fox farm grow big veg. nutes half strength every other week..watering it every 4 days...about a week ago the tips of every leaf started to curl down...my water pH is close to 8...pH problem? heat problem?

the top layer is dry but when i stick my finger into it, there is still moisture 1/2" down...watering it does not make a difference...the leaves still curl down when it's watered.

with my water having a pH close to 8, would it raise the pH of the soil?

Your ideal pH should be just slightly under 7 for veg growth, but meh. Its also not a heating or watering problem. To my eye, you need to foliar feed with Cal mag. Your ladies are wanting a bit of calcium and magnesium is what the leaf shape is saying. Its not very far gone though, you noticed it pretty early.

You have been reading the right stuff then. Dolomite lime and epsom are the way I go. You may even be able to skip the dolomite if you have to, but I said Cal-Mag because they like to manifest together much of the time.

I'm sure it would work fine, but its not gonna need a whole ton of supplementation. I usually suggest epsom salts because its cheap. I have never personally seen an acute case of calcium deficency so unless the plant is severely malnourished I go with epsom.

But if you don't mind paying for shit you could otherwise jury into working, go for it. It goes against my grain to buy nutes I could find (in other forms) at Wal-Mart, but I'm a cheap fuck so yeah.

The Cal Mag Plus Botanicare is $8 shipped on ebay...so it's pretty cheap.

I was wondering, I have some Happy Frog bat guano 0-5-0...should I make some guano tea and use it every time I water along with the cal mag? My plant is a little over 3 weeks in veg stage.

Your plant looks quite healthy right now, no apparent need for added phosphorus. I'm not sure how long you intent to veg your plant, but its getting to be prime time to take a clone if thats your thing.

When you DO switch to flowering you're going to have to change nutrients of course. Fox Farm has good stuff, I'm sure you know what to look for. My only suggestion at that point is, as they progress into budding I like to lower my pH to      5.8 - 6 so it boosts P and K uptake to the plant, and limits N by a small percentage. This will be close to the time where the leaves start to yellow naturally though, so its a nice boost to the flowers without hurting anything.

EDIT: I was reading the earlier posts (Byrain linked me to this thread, I saw leaves curling and I was like "cal mag, next!" and I wanna clear up some misinformation.

They are tolerating the heat perfectly. When its barely too hot, the leaf edges curl up slightly to try and transpire the excess heat. Way too much, and you get crispy.

You water by the weight of the pot, not the look of the soil. Marijuana needs plenty of water, true. But the roots need to breath sometimes. I wait until the pot gets a lbit less than half as heavy as when it was freshly watered. It takes anywhere from a week to 4 days. If you can find some medical grade 100% hydrogen peroxide you can add that in with waterings to oxygenate the roots and allow you to water more frequently. Its a trick from immersion hydro setups where the roots never leave the water.

What size is your pot? If they were root bound, it would present as slowed and stunted growth. You could lift the soil and all a few inches above the pot (carefully!!) and see pretty easily how root bound it is. I don't think they're root bound though, but just in case, pot size?

The plant looks healthy to me. A little epsom is always good because pot likes magnesium. You want your ph in soil to be around 6 but in hydro 5.0 to 5.5 is probably better. Don't love them to death. Wait until the soil is good and dry before watering. Etc.

Eh, you're good to go. I try to find pots that come in gallon sizes, but its an iffy shot sometimes. Good rule of thumb is to have a gallon of pot per month of total growth cycle. 10" pot is gonna be 3-4 gallons depending on how deep it is.

So I bought some Cal-Mag Plus Botanicare about 5 days ago. I used it with my watering schedule and the leaves seemed to curl even more a few hours later? What does this mean? I use filtered tap water. I'm in So Cal and our water is hard...too much calcium?

Do you have a way to check your soil pH? If cal-mag made them more stressed that would be my guess. Some one said that 6 is the target soil pH. I like to shoot for 6.5 but so long as its under 7 it should be fine. From what I understand chem ferts can cause an acidic pH drift and organics tend to produce a basic pH drift. If it is too basic, citric acid is a great way to fix that. You should check your tap water for hardness and pH. That could potentially be your problem. If you have a feed store nearby hit them up for some molasses. Using that every watering and a touch of Epsom salts(magnesium sulfate) here and there should provide you with an adequate and inexpensive source for Mg.

Ok, I just saw that about your water being hard. Now you can pH adjust it with the citric acid like I was saying. However the calcium could still potentially be problematic. You could go to the grocery store and get the $.30 a gallon stuff. But it would be worth your while to pick up a home reverse osmosis filter. Short of that a pur or something like that would help.

You may want to flush your soil.

Don't have a pH tester...looking to purchase one...what kind should I purchase? I see a few different types online...those hand held metal ones with meter on the handle and some plastic ones.
