Analyze my mushies, please?
    #14213663 - 03/31/11 07:50 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys,

I put my cakes in the fruiting chamber last Saturday (no pinning yet).  I've been having problems keeping the humidity up, but think I may have it under control.

Two of the cakes each had a single pin on them when I dunked/rolled, these pins have now grown into little mushrooms.  I've seen a lot of people around the boards who can see a mushroom and gauge what it needs more/less of, so that's what I'm hoping to get here.

First up, this fat guy.
There is a lot of dense, dry, white fuzz at the base.  It resembles the texture of perlite but isn't quite as hard.  I assume it's mycelium of some form.

Is he a mutant?

This is his cap.  It has a giant hole in it!

This is the healthier looking of the two.
He still has a little of the white stuff almost all the way up his stem (but it's no where near as thick as the base of the guy above).

Many thanks!

I believe he looks that way because of how squished he was in the jar.  I had to struggle to get him out.

But, does he really look abused?!:frown:  What would you point you finger at me doing wrong?

hmmm, that looks weird. how is your fc built?

misting fanning schedule?

lighting?

how long did you wait before birthing once colonized?

did you dunk and roll?

Fruiting chamber:  Shotgun, 1/4inch holes every 2 inches.

Misting/fanning:  Mist heavily every 2-3 hours, fan when things look a bit too wet (I haven't been fanning too much as it seems to dry out the chamber quickly).

Lighting: 6500k CFL 12/12 schedule (I move it around the terrarium to hit all sides).

Birthing/consolidation:  I waited about a week and a half after full colonization to birth.  Some of the cakes had pins, one even had a giant mushroom growing in it already (I picked it before dunking).  I did dunk and roll.  Dunked for 24 hours, rolled in baked dry verm, and misted well afterward to keep the verm wet.

I'm worried now. =(

how much perlite do you have in there, you need about 4 inches. also dont be afraid to fan, you need that fresh air exchange. make sure you give your cakes a good spray and then fan for a minute straight, or until your arm starts hurting, this will cause lots of evaporation which is one of the biggest pinning triggers.

my thoughts are not enought fresh air exchange, lets wait though for someone with more experience

I have exactly 4 inches of perlite.  I was at 3 inches but some members suggested that I purchase another bag.  Are you thinking I should go for another one?

And alright, I will start fanning after every mist like the teks suggest.

Does the second guy look okay?!  Or does he look bad, too?

I'd really like to figure this out, as I have another 14 jars that are finished with colonization and need to be birthed!

they dont look bad at all, they are gonna grow to be giants, but you'll probibly only get that one mush from that flush,

dont worry about another bag if you have 4 inches thats great. just stick your finger in there and see if its moist in the center, and if it is that should be fine for your humidity. i have a sgfc as well and i dont monitor the humidity it just hold if the perlite is wet.

and letting it fan is very important so dont slack on that.

That's fine, as I didn't really count it as a flush.  I didn't expect to get new pins for at least a week or so, I felt too guilty chopping these guys off after removing them from the jars as they were still tiny. :crazy2:

Thanks for all of your help!

I have started to fan accordingly!

That's what I had assumed before his response (I have seen worse looking mushrooms from very experienced users)!  Thanks for the reassurance!

Second one looks fine to me, first one's a little bit warped, but it happens.  Sounds like you could fan more often though.  Fan more often than you mist, and it's not necessary to "mist heavily".  Just dampen everything and fan the water away to stimulate pinning.  The cakes get their water from the sub, from dunking, etc; not really from the misting.

If your SGFC is constructed properly as you describe (holes all 6 sides, yes?), with the 4" perlite, your humidity should be fine (anyway, it recovers quickly after a fanning session).

# of posts =/= Cultivation experience  noob

Other wise I think your fruits look great dude, the first one I personally would have already eaten I have a thing for mutants.

The 2nd one reminds me of a short fat cigar lol

Other than that i think your cakes look alright and if you mist and fan and keep the other variables right you should have some tasty scrooms good luck brudda!

Do you have holes in the bottom of SGFC? That's an important step that is often overlooked that helps both in humidity and FAE. Also the mushies look alright to me, first mushroom I ever grew on a cake had a hole in the cap too and you could see the veils inside o_0, its amazing what nature comes up with.

Me either. :frown:
I do believe that I will have better results when these cakes actually start pinning in the chamber. =)
