barrier's first bulk grow! syzygy

barrier's First Bulk Grow! Strain: Syzygy (I'm not 100% sure though, ha) FC: Classic Monotub Spawn: Rye Berries Substrate: Coir/Verm/Gypsum (1 brick/2qt/1c) Sub Depth: 2.5in-3in Spawn/Sub Ratio: Just under 1:3 Lighting: 1 6500K Daylight Bulb on 12/12 cycle (for fruiting) Fruiting Conditions: Approx. 80F, fan running in closet with FC 24/7, humidity will be kept above 90% with a reptile humidifier Prior Experience: Previously produced almost an ounce from 7 pf cakes (my first grow) Tek's Used: Damion's Coir Tek, 4 easy step rye, grain LC, ohmatic's monotub Summary: I initially inoculated 10 pint jars of rye with cambodian but all 10 jars went bad, I did another 10 with Ralphster's SOTM which I believe was Syzygy but I could be completely wrong. 3 survived. Made grain LC with 1 of the jars and inoculated 7 new ones (because I only have 10 jars ha). 3 went bad but I'm kind of tired of waiting at this point so today I pasteurized the coir and verm and threw the spawn in. It's sitting in the monotub now so I'll update with pics in like a week. Let me know what you guys think so far. I know lack of pics is boring but I also think a picture of a monotub with coir in it from my iPhone camera is a little boring too.
--------- 4/6 colonizing the monotub

Coir/verm/gypsum ratio and a lot of my inspiration courtesy of stonesun.

it sounds like you are pretty well organized, but with that much trouble on spawn/contams, you may want to slow down a bit. 17/20 is quite a lot of work wasted... growing is a lot of waiting...
good luck with it

quick question. is 81F too hot for a coir/verm/rye substrate that is colonizing? my roommates dont like an electric bill so we dont turn the AC on usually. also updated the main page

The higher the temp the more likely it is to contaminate, but coir is pretty contam resistance or so I hear.

are you talking about the environment it is in or the substrate temp itself? the sub will get a bit hotter as the mycelium expands

another quick question. i don't have a clear lid, how should i set up my light for optimal results? just to one side coming down from the top but low enough to get light throughout the monotub?

81 is getting close to too high of temps. From past teks I've read on you're looking to be in the mid to high 70's.
I'd pay attention to your cleanliness by losing so many jars.

that will work or you could wrap the top in plastic wrap. pretty annoying, but if the light is directly above the sub, your fruits will be more likely to grow straight upward

I inoculate with a syringe through an alcohol soaked sponge into self sealing lids. Some of my lids were not properly sealed I discovered recently so that was most likely the problem with the jars going bad. I fixed them.
Only had 1 jar of my pf tek grow contam (using micropore tape to cover inoc holes. inoculated in my bathroom after i lysoled everything.) and it wasn't even trich like the jars that recently went bad.
I guess ill just put cling wrap over the whole top, I want this grow to be good.
also i got lucky, my region just had a big cold front so the temp in my place dropped down to around 70. the tubs not colonizing as fast but its nice to stop worrying about contams so much lol.

it's been colonizing the monotub for 2 weeks today. is the general consensus that i should fruit it now regardless of colonization % to avoid contams or should i risk it and let it colonize for a few more days?

ideally, it should be ready to fruit after 10 days and whatever consolidation you want to allow. 2 weeks should be plenty. fruit, or maybe post some pics and we can see what it looks like if you are uncertain.

I know it's blurry but all I have is an iPhone camera and I think you can pretty much tell how colonized it is.

most of the coir-based subs I see only colonize about that much for whatever reason. this could be what you've got going on or it could still be colonizing. it's hard to tell with such a blurry pic. you want to look for knotting or pins to know for certain that it's ready. time is not the best determinate so much as it's a guideline under ideal conditions.
your spawn ratio is good, so that shouldn't be an issue. you can wait a few more days and see if it changes at all (use pics, not memory of an image) or fruit potentially premature, and let it finish grabbing the food in fruiting conditions.
try hpoo if you can properly pasteurize next time around IMO.

i put it in fruiting conditions. if its still gonna colonize a bit i guess it will but im gonna give it pinning triggers.
