Have you tried booting into safe mode and running something like SpyBot to try and clean it?

yes install c cleaner, microsoft security essentials and malware bytes and run them in safe mode.
c cleaner will clean up whatever registry errors have been messed up by the trojan but only after the virus is deleted, so fun it last. also, be sure to cancel the trojan with cntrl alt delete or whatever brings you to the task manager, if it's running in the background, it's going to mess up whatever progress the virus scan is making, even in safe mode.
be sure to try and run chkdsk as well, very few viruses actually fragment the hard disk so bad that it needs to be fixed with chkdsk, but you can never be too careful with computers.
if after all that, you still can't access files on your computer, then it probably messed up a rundll32.exe file, in which case you need to do one of 2 things:
1) pop your windows disk in there and do a system repair(back up all your files first to be safe, always!)
2) back your files up and reinstall windows. and make sure you go to internet explorer, tools, and then go to connections, then click on lan settings, and make sure that the 'use proxy server' option is off, because most viruses spy on you and send a lot of your information to a proxy i.p. on windows 7 i think that option is in a slightly different location
at least you can use the internet, that's a good sign. it's not a GREAT sign, viruses can mess up a lot of registry files and still let you use the internet, but being able to load windows, means you can still access your files one way or another.
let me know if any of that helps

It's not a trojan, it's called a rogue antivirus. Look up the name of the virus on Google and find the manual removal instructions.

Chances are a dialog box came up and warned him he was infected and asked if he wanted to scan. Clicking anywhere on that window has the potential to open the front door for the virus to install itself. I fix computers for a living and I see it multiple times a day. It's a cunt to get rid of.
