Want to avoid a speed trap or a DUI checkpoint? There's an app for that

A clutch of new apps for phones and tablet computers are giving new meaning to Apple's advertising blurb that 'there's no limit to what you can do'. Surely the company was not referring to the speed limit - or the drink-driving limit. Phone apps that help drivers dodge highway radar guns or detect red-light cameras are becoming increasingly popular - although not with police who are trying to enforce the law and encourage safe driving.
One of the most popular apps for drivers in the U.S. is PhantomAlert, which downloads information to GPS or phone devices and lets drivers know the locations of known speed traps, red-light cameras and school zones. The app's DUI checkpoint feature - which sends alerts about drink-driving checkpoints that have been reported by other drivers - is troubling for some police agencies. Another popular app, Cobra iRadar, allows drivers to connect your iPhone to a conventional radar detector - boosting its performance by giving it updated information.
The devices have attracted mixed feelings, especially among law enforcement officers who have first-hand knowledge of the results of excessive speed or drink-driving. Captain Paul Starks, of the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland, spoke to USA Today about the apps, especially the ones singling out DUI checkpoints. He said: 'If people are going to use those, what other purpose are they going to use them for except to drink and drive? 'They're only thinking of one consequence, and that's being arrested. They're not thinking of ending the lives of other motorists, pedestrians, other passengers in their cars or themselves.'
But fans of the devices say that they promote safe driving - pointing out speed limits, school zones and dangerous stretches of road. Dennis Ricketts, a retired firefighter in Newport News, Virginia, bought a lifetime subscription to PhantomAlert about 18 months years ago, and said the device made him even more aware as a driver. He told USA Today: 'A lot of times when people drive, they're not paying a lot of attention, especially if it's a road you drive on repeatedly.
'With this, you are a lot more aware of everything that's going on, and on things that might be coming up.'

I've never come across one, but they'd have fun if they ever tried to stop me.. Checkpoints are totally illegal and unconstitional..
Lol, everytime a cop has asked to search my car I say no (this has happened thee times), and it involves 30min - 1hr waiting for a state troop and K9.. then the search is a waste of time because I don't ever drive with anything.. It's so funny to see them wipe a tear from their eye when I finally get to drive off
