Agar Work in an Open Space?

I was talking to my microbiology teacher today and asked if I could use a clean bench to work with my agar and Agaricus prints. He responded by saying that for fungi and bacteria, he doesn't use a bench but just a still air space. So he told me to clean off a table and do my agar work there and when it colonizes to bring it in to him. That sounded odd to me, but I will do as he wishes. So does this look/sound right?

I would at least make yourself a glovebox to put on the desk

That will be contaminant city if you do agar work there. RR

I have had good results with some shitty setups. Guess you gotta work with what you got.

What sort of area ought I do it in? I've got an old glovebox, but I've got to dig it out.

Not sure if mushrooms are a lot different, but when we did agar work in my biochem lab with bacteria and eukaryotes we just did it on an open bench. We hardly ever had contamination problems (maybe once during the semester). Anyway, I'd say give it a shot

A glovebox is second choice. A laminar flow hood is first. RR

What ought I tell him so as to use the clean bench they have at the school?

You dont have a flowhood most likely. Dig out your old glovebox and get to work.

??? My teacher said they have one at the school and they use it primarily for plant tissue cultures. He did not explicitly state that I was not welcome to use it, he just found (for some reason which is beyond me) it odd I wanted to for fungi.

Screw what he said and ask to use it. But if your doing this at your house, get a glovebox.

What? are you crazy? You asked your teacher to let u use the school's flowhood to cultivate illegal mushrooms? Bad form.
Get the glovebox out. Your teacher is an idiot for telling you to do it in the open.
edit--- oh agaricus...when you assume..

I use a compost-agar based media at our labs and we find very little contamination from bacteria when we sub out Agaricus from the wild even in still air. PDA is bad unless you are in a clean environment such as a laminar hood/ glove box etc. If you have access to a mushroom farm you need the phase 2 compost. if you are interested hit me up for the recipe. I am in a commercial mushroom lab.
