Why would you want a Missile to not go Straight to its Target?
    #14207677 - 03/30/11 03:08 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Supposedly this THAAD doesn't go straight in order to reduce velocity and the instantaneous rate of change of velocity with respect to time. To me this seems really inefficient, can't they just make a missile that can take the high speeds

THAAD energy management steering (TEMS) maneuver which results in nominal velocities and accelerations

its cheaper to just do a loopty loop, plus it makes all the people watching go "oh shit" for a minute and that alone makes it worth it

maybe its to prevent the missle being intercepted by another missle or some sort of anti-missle device.

By doing this, the fire-control system (if radar controlled) is much less susceptible to techniques that cause errors.  In electronic warfare, against radar controlled systems a common technique is to introduce false information that will introduce a small error in the missles fire control system.  The object is to get the enlisted man that operates the radar to take the computer out of computer control and attempt a manual track.  However, by having these movements in the Thaad, the false information can be correlated as such--false information--by DSP, and the missle won't lose it's lock on the target.
