I am very familiar with that photo and the photographer. Beautiful and violently sad.
Here's a higher resolution. A photo like that deserves a decent resolution.

Look him up and educate yourself before judging. He's an artist, a photographer, and the art of a photographer is to capture the horrible and beautiful things in this world we turn a blind eye to. He was in a third world country with barely enough food for him and his company. Could/should he have tried to feed that one kid? Probably! But there's also tons of other starving people there, and all around the world, and he can't save them all. He took enough shit in his lifetime. His art is to expose us to the horrors of the world so possibly we can try and change things.

This. It wasn't a situation where one single kid was starving to death, think.

i saw that awhile back, apparently for some reason the photographer wasnt allowed to touch the child, something about him giving the photographer a disease, or vise versa. he wasnt alone, but yeah killed himself.

i understand what you're trying to say, but this kid was less than a mile away from a UN food camp... That's like 5 minutes of walking to get the kid there... besides, who says you have to help EVERYBODY? Isn't one life worth enough? I bet you if the photographer would have helped this child get some food his life would have been 19293012x better... Instead he just took a picture of a good-as-dead starving child and left.

just to think that kid is one of thousands in that area and then think of all the other areas exactly as depressing and poor. i often wished i could do something to help out people like that, but i dunno if i have the stomach to be in such a dire and disasterous state of society. plus, even tho i eat and have shelter im poor as fuck. so i dunno what good id be anyway.
that shit makes me want to cry

On 27 July 1994 Carter drove to the Braamfontein Spruit river, near the Field and Study Centre, an area where he used to play as a child, and took his own life by taping one end of a hose to his pickup truck’s exhaust pipe and running the other end to the passenger-side window. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning at the age of 33. Portions of Carter's suicide note read:
"I am depressed ... without phone ... money for rent ... money for child support ... money for debts ... money!!! ... I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain ... of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners...I have gone to join Ken [recently deceased colleague Ken Oosterbroek] if I am that lucky."[8]

"This picture shocked the world".
You do realise that the act of him taking that picture and making it available to the rest of the world was an extremely good thing, showing the rest of world what Africa can really be like. What he did does not make him a useless dickhole
Walk through Kolkata and give money to one person begging and you'll be swarmed by others looking for money. What are you to do,give away all your money? Sometimes you have to take the hit and be realistic.

My cousins in East Africa actually. Said in like two weeks he only saw one white person who was driving past. Culture shock
The guy there had spent six months trying to make a website. My cousin was going to speak up and say he'd be able to do it but was told not to say anything as they take things very easy there,no rush

Such a said world it is. When life is only pain, and one knows nothing else, one wonders what makes them want to go on except for hopes of ceasing the pain for just a moment and experience something else.
I'd rather kill myself than bring a child into that situation that the one in the photo is going through. Sadly there is so much disease, rape, and other shit in that place.

even if it was just that one kid...i can understand not helping him. I dont think I'd be able to just stand by, but it's part of a journalists job to be an objective observer...even when it's incredibly difficult to just observe.
the world can be a horrible place. but it's a journalists job to show us what happens out there. free of the involvement of the reporter.
that said, if i was a journalist in his shoes I dont think i'd have the guts to not pick that kid up and run him to some food and water.

There is literally no justification for him not picking up the child and carrying him to the UN camp.
This picture isn't new to me, I've seen it a hundred times over the years.
I'm not some bleeding heart do-giver. I live in a major city, I get hit up for change by bums every day. I never give them money. It's just how I am.
They aren't dying. If there was a starving child, dying, in front of my house, I would take him to the hospital.
That is humanity, that is empathy.
I would not take his picture. I understand the nature of the photographer, to provide a glimpse of the world to people through his eyes. I have no problem with him taking the picture. That is fine. But not helping the child, after taking the picture, is inexcusable.

I dont necessarily believe the caption. Its a little too ridiculous.
edit - I recall reading somewhere, somebody debunking the caption. Im not sure if that was on here or elsewhere...

Very powerful, very sad, very lost for words right now. Tears came to my eyes. Being a photographer myself, I would have helped the kid no matter what. If I lost my job, got a disease, it doesn't matter. It would have come back to me, because I helped him. Very strong image. Tells a lifetime of stories.

At first I was thinking along the lines of "sometimes there are guerillas around that might ambush you or blah blah blah"
Like other folks have said, there really is just no excuse for that. It's so ridiculous it's beyond laughable.
I'd probably kill myself too if I so blatantly failed to realize my potential by failing to do something so pathetically easy in lieu of acquiescing to the death of a youth child.

We as individuals should all know we cannot save everyone, nor help everyone. Just as I cannot save every person who falls down the stairs, if one is falling, I am going to try and catch them.
The photo is art, but the humanity is showing that one can do something-anything. Every little bit counts. The only failure is doing nothing.

Need verification of the caption. That seems shady to me, since the caption wasn't in the original photograph. Looks like some doctored up chain email picture designed to evoke emotion in the recipient, insuring they'll send it to 10 more people. I know the photo is real and that caption probably has some semblance of fact in it but I'd bet it's not all true.

Alternative account of the photograph
Portuguese photojournalist based in South Africa João Silva, who accompanied Carter to Sudan, gave a different version of events in an interview with Japanese journalist and writer Akio Fujiwara that was published in Fujiwara's book The Boy who Became a Postcard (絵葉書にされた少年 - Ehagaki ni sareta shōnen).[7] According to Silva, they (Carter and Silva) went to Sudan with the United Nations aboard Operation Lifeline Sudan and landed in Southern Sudan on March 11, 1993. The UN told them that they would take off again in 30 minutes (the time necessary to distribute food), so they ran around looking to take shots. The UN started to distribute corn and the women of the village came out of their wooden huts to meet the plane. Silva went looking for guerrilla fighters, while Carter strayed no more than a few dozen feet from the plane. Again according to Silva, Carter was quite shocked as it was the first time that he had seen a famine situation and so he took many shots of the children suffering from famine. Silva also started to take photos of children on the ground as if crying, which were not published. The parents of the children were busy taking food from the plane so they had left their children only briefly while they collected the food. This was the situation for the girl in the photo taken by Carter. A vulture landed behind the girl. To get the two in focus, Carter approached the scene very slowly so as not to scare the vulture away and took a photo from approximately 10 metres. He took a few more photos and then the vulture flew off.
