It does preach pretty good values (10 commandments) IMO, but don't take it literally or too seriously... otherwise you'll turn into some jesus loving weirdo.
But...but...I'm a "Jesus loving weirdo." What's your point?

iThink said: I wouldn't have thought this was even worth discussing, but apparently there are a good amount of Christians in this forum.
I say that Christianity just another made up religion that is only prevalent today due to Constantine making it the religion of the Roman Empire to gain more control over his subjects.
Oh, is that what YOU say? Well congratulations on that little tidbit of opinion about 2000 years of global history. That certainly is one small perspective, but there have been a lot of people after Constantine's death-bed decision to employ Christ over Mithras. There are also the considerations of a couple of dozen different academic disciplines, like world history, the history of religions, the sociology of religions, the psychology of religions, the history of political systems, systematic theology, the evolution of religious doctrines in Roman Catholicism, Byzantine Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox Christianity, studies of the Christian Reformation, etc., etc., etc.
World religions grow from a seed - the seed is the interior experiences of their founders: Jesus, Buddha, Zoroaster, Mani, Muhammed, Shankara, Guru Nanak, etc.. The political structures suck the life from these portals of great energy that inspire millions. The religious establishments have, in Christianity most notably, sucked life from humble believers like the machines in the Matrix sucked life from their human batteries, and then used that energy to amass fortunes and conquer other peoples. All true. But your statement is simplistic as to be silly. There's a lot more going on than the surface structures of organizational religion, and some of it is truly transcendental and transforming of human beings.
Of course my statement was extremely simplistic and failed to describe much of anything beyond a vague idea. Do you want me to type you a fucking paper analyzing all aspects of Christianity's growth?
There is nothing wrong with being general as long as you recognize that you are being general. What your saying is like saying it is wrong to describe riding a bike by mentioning pedaling because it is so much more detailed than that if you want to fully describe it.

i dont like your style ithink
anyway regardless if what you say is true, ppl on this forum have pointed out that christianity is a label.
remove all the labels and you will see lots of BS going on in peoples (yes even secular peeps) heads.
i dont think that believing in christ, or that he was a great guy, or that there were some valuable lessons he taught for leading your life,
necessarily means there is more BS going on than in any other skull. in fact some 'christians' may be much closer to exorcising the BS demons than you are...

I never said that secular minds typically don't have a lot of "BS" in them. Everyone has some level of "bullshit" (depending on how you define it) floating around in their heads, myself included. The only thing is that my core beliefs pertaining to the nature of my existence are true as far as I know.
I actually agree somewhat with your last point. I think most people have beliefs built around emotional reactions to their environment, secular heads often included. Christianity and other religions played their evolutionary role, and I can see how they help some people immensely.
With all of this said, I do not go out of my way to try to not offend people when debating them in the philosophy forum. The whole point is to tear down other's ideas to the best of your ability, and to back up the ones you believe in.

What's the difference? The people who teach it are part of the religion.

Everyone who is a Christian knows that the so called Christians on this board are false "new age" BS artists.
I am the only true Christian here.
Gnostics, Spongites, Universalists, ect... twisting the scriptures because they hate God's Word.

No shit, Sherlock. How many Christians do you think actually read the Bible? Religions don't become popular through studied analysis of history and scripture by every participating individual, they become popular through social and (in Constantine's case) political necessity.
It's so easy to write off things we don't understand as "bullshit." Too easy, in my opinion.

I believe the bible is truly a history that was made by people. I just think that it was misinterpreted and therefore we have Christianity as it is today.
If you want to tell me how I'm wrong about translating the bible, I'll tell you you're wrong for telling me how to read a book.

I was agreeing with you.
Atheism is a noble enterprise when undertaken in the reform of social institutions, but it's a form of dogmatic fundamentalism when it's used to tell people their beliefs are "wrong."
