That's okay, because neither his post nor my interpretation of it deals directly with the history of the human race. It deals with the meanings we create for ourselves and the title is fine the way it is.

God damn it, you people really debate anything here?
No I didn't make it up, it's an underground movement, read
the The origin of nuances by Edgar Strint, he mentions it in
there, along with talking about three eyed mud monster wrestling
young vagina-less virgins.

:crankey:

Now get back to talking about the subject now that this all is cleared
up...

What does the title have to do with meanings we create ourselves? In one breath you talk of historic race creation and tell me that is what the title is related to and in the next you tell me that's irrelevant to the discussion.

Passion stems from direct participation, and it may be sustained or self-limiting. In a mind confined by meanings, passion can exist upon a properly-articulated network of those meanings.

There is no "normal." We are more complex than you and I.

I was only listing the multitudes of possible meanings intended by the word "We" in the title. Specifically, in that post, I was referring to the specific definitions of "we" from which you appear to be operating, based upon your interpretation of the question.

Well historic race creation is the only context in which the title could make sense as far as I can see. It certaintly isn't linguistically correct to say it's related to the meanings we make for ourselves in life.

Sure it is.

People's behavior is dictated by impulses to which it reacts. The question, "Are we made to excel or to live in mediocrity," simply avoids spelling out the innumerable possible motivating factors: time and place of birth, heritage, upbringing, economic factors, genetic fit, education, culture, friends, family, et cetera.

That question would be phrased "In what ways do we make ourselves to excel or to live in mediocrity?". Pretty different question all together

I feel you, man.

Since nobody (even you) responded to my original address to the heart of your question, I'll repeat it: I think that at one time in our evolutionary history, we experienced a continuous passion unbroken by hesitations stemming from the lessons we've learned from our past. Since that time, we have learned to control our passions, for better or for worse.

I would say it's for the better, as it has enabled us to realize the full potential of our brains, but it's also led to the atrophy of passion itself.

Again, the answer to your question is not in the past but in the present and how it emerges into the future. Are we worker drones or are we gods?

Would you contend that the subjugation of unmeditated animal instinct by the faculties of reason we exercise here have prohibited us from realizing the full potential of our brains?

No the two questions mean entirely different things. You have one of two moves. Either you refute the question's meaning in terms of what I had intended to refer it to or demonstrate how the questions mean the same thing.

Or, I could just make some smartass pop-cultural reference (complete with picture) satirizing your offer, thus ending the debate, and everybody will laugh, and move on.

Either way, I stand by my point that your problem with the OP's question stems entirely from your own reading.
