People - are we made to excel or are we made to live in mediocrity?
    #14210087 - 03/30/11 03:19 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

So which is it?

I know a lot of people that aren't particularly passionate about anything,
they seem to just live their lives with the volume turned down, working
to get some money, waiting for the next game to come on, waiting for
the next time they get to drink beer with their friends, enjoying life at a
low intensity.

Then there are people that have strong passions, euphoric obsessions, that
they pursue. I don't mean something great when I say excel btw, any type
of hobby or activity that is pursued with passion and in the best way someone
can. These are people that excel, that are trying to be good at something
because they enjoy it very much.

I tend to see it as boring and exciting people...

The question is, form your experiences, which one is "normal", which one is
the norm?

I think many people at some point in their life get a surge of passion at something they know they love, but society puts them down and they get discourage. personally i keep on getting surges of passions i want to follow  and do, but society always gets in the way. People may still want to follow their intuition but at a lower level because of being put down.

apparently, both are the norm. humans don't live in the wilderness anymore, a place where the "boring" ones would actually just die.

I think that so-called "passionless" individuals are victims of a well-established passion-control system, and that so-called passionate individuals are also living with the volume down.

In the absence of well-developed value judgments and existential anxiety articulated by contemporary constructions of the universe, the natural condition is one of consistent, uninterrupted passion.

Passion control system? Natural state without existential anxiety? Do you mean
that as an abstract concept or actually refer to a time before "contemporary
constructions of the universe"? A lot of responses seem to be blaming external
sources for a mediocre existence, IMO that's just a way of shifting blame. All comes
from within, society or whatever doesn't stand in your way if you truly want something
because you're not important, nobody really gives a fuck about what you are doing
until you directly interact with people, and at that point society's influence is
pretty diluted.

meatcakeman -  i don't mean the inept ones by boring/mediocre people, just people
who choose the path of least resistance, people without drive to do something better

I believe that the practice of laying the blame for any identifiable problem on any single identifiable source stems from broken thoughts. You will never be able to find the root cause of any given mistake or deficiency. It goes back farther than you can see.

By laying the blame for anything upon anything, we perpetuate the problem-solution mentality that has given the modern world so many problems.

IMO, transcending the impulse to blame things for problems is foundational to accepting full responsibility for your own existence.

Also would like to point out that I'm not "blaming" the passion-control system for anything. It enables us to do incredible things, but it does have the downside of hiding us from our own animal natures and, for some of us, does its job too well, resulting in a lifetime of doldrums.

Not at all, if you were asking, "do we excel or are we mediocre?" the question would make sense. As it stands it doesn't.

Well sure it's relevant, if you're nit-picking. If I'm reading it right, the title of the thread refers to the making of meaning in our lives, and begs the question: is Homo sapiens primordially a species of ants or a species of gods? The answer to this question is not in the past but in our future.

I guess if questioning one -half of the MAIN ASSUMPTION/PREMISE is nit-picking, then you are right. :ohwell:

Well ok, I should clarify, I don't really care about that part, I am
interested in exactly what I asked. I said made because I believe it's
a way of life that you are more or less born with.

So let's assume two-dicked purple aliens from the pegasus system made us,
did they make us one way or the other? Or did they not make us in any way
and we just develop one way or the other?

Do you think it's possible that, in pursuit of semiotic consistency, we may find ourselves disproportionately distracted from realities which exist outside of the verbal consistency we seek to impose (upon ourselves or upon others)?

Well I think you need some evidence that something did "make" us before you can find evidence as to "it's" intentions behind the act. Which is what the question is pointing to in the proper use of the english language. If the author means something else he ought to clarify his language.

The problem stems not from the original question but from the interpretation of the word "we" made by the reader.

Who are "we"? Obviously he is referring to the human species, but is he referring to "us" as currently living organisms, to "us" as an historic entity, or to "us" as a set of genetic markers?

A full inspection of the clause must confront us with the possibility that the "we" he is speaking of is the "we" that we create ourselves.

I am made to type out this post - by whom? By me.

That is decidedly unclear in the OP's statement as he doesn't talk on the history of the human race in these terms in any single part.
