I know exactly what you mean. Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about?

Predictions of the future all end up in the toilet.

Nature is chaotic.

One of the biggest and possibly saddest illusions that we're currently under is the assumption that our techno-progress will continue to unfold on a flawless trajectory.

There is nothing to indicate this other than a few shotty observations from the last 200 years by over-zealous scientists trying to get their name on the very books they ironically claim will become obsolete.

Love,

Irony

i don't really think you're getting the point of this. i don't see it as much about predictions as it is just a very well-organized collage of factual information of our current state of thangs, and possible ways they can unfold throughout the given timestream

this is all stuff that's being looked into right now, as for the future --it hasn't happened yet. so there's no way to know for sure how thangs will turn out.

i think it's stupid to be optimistic, and it's stupid to be pessimistic. just wait

The site itself states that the timeline is a mixture of projection and fiction.

It's interesting nonetheless.

i think the world is what we make it. some of the predictions are far-fetched, but some seem very likely. it would be very bizarre to live in a world where people spend most of their time interacting in a digital world or a virtual reality. but then again, our world today isn't as extreme as people predicted 50 years ago.

the scariest and most convincing reality to me, is a world where my kids will have little or no privacy. sadly, the individual 100 years from now will have a much higher capability of causing destruction. "terrorism" will continue to be the foundation for our government's invasion on privacy into our personal lives.

why do humans put such emphasis on privacy? it's a contrived concept that wouldn't really be relevant come the technological singularity

it wasn't relevant before our seclusion into boxes and the surfacing of our egos. what do you really not want others to know about? and why

is it really that big a deal to halt the entire progress of the all of humanity for some cobwebs you'd rather not have dusted out

take a look at the world around you. 7 billion people. how many of them think of themselves as an individual in this society

if it wasnt not a good idea there would be no reason for walls.

walls were originally built to keep things hidden or keep things out or in.

haha i didnt mean to start an argument on privacy. i just mean, that its none of our governments business to know where we are and what we are doing. likewise for corporations. consider this.. not trying to fear monger or anything, but nothing good can come to you when a corporation or government knows all the details of your personal life.. youre never going to benefit from being an honest or good person online, but you could easily lose a job because your facebook photo shows you smokin pot, or you posted something online that someone doesn't agree with. by privacy, i mean anonymity. just remember that the glory of this website, and most of the internet, is that we remain anonymous... and when websites like CNN or New York Times require you to log on to facebook to post comments, we're jeopardizing our free speech and privacy.

WE SHOULD NEVER NEED A PERSONAL INTERNET ID AND OUR GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE NO HAND IN REGULATING THE INTERNET

Exactly.

I watched this TED video the other day on where biotechnology is and the ethics of it. The presenter was basically taking what we're doing now to the extreme by saying that in the future we could have rows of animals set up to produce certain proteins, hormones, etc. and we just extract them from their blood or whatever.

Sorry dude, but this is just the beginning! By the time that era rolls around we will have found a more efficient way. In every new technological era people make some weird stuff (his example of the grey area of bioethics was growing an ear on a mouse) because it's experimentation! That's how people learn.

That's fascinating to see what peak technologies and information we have available at this moment, but it's worthless for actual predictions.

i agree with this too; progress is never steady for the human race, and hardly predictable. i think that change comes in bursts and as technology continues to progress at an accelerated rate, so will change. we are in the beginning of a time where the world could change in almost any way, almost instantly. on a cosmic scale, we are just a bunch of fucking kids; we can't handle the pressure that we're laying upon ourselves, and were going to make some big mistakes.

its not a question of if, but when. when are we going to grow up, and tackle the simple issues that separate us? we shouldnt be arguing about 'which cell phone is better' and 'which jersey shore character is dumber'.. We should really be asking ourselves, how can we limit pollution? how can we protect forests and wildlife? how can stop over-population? how can we feed and supply clean energy to everyone? im sure there are many better questions than these few examples.

the word that i think will best represent the 21st century is "confusion." this haze of materialism, imperialism, corporatism, and industrialization will continue to blind us until everyone realizes that none of this shit really matters. all that matters is that we understand each other and that we share our emotions. i think its going to take a long, LONG time before we all come together. and i think the world is in for an extremely depressing and stressful 21st century, as we struggle to find ourselves and our place in the universe

oh well that makes sense. i was getting the idea that by the point in time when all privacy concepts are eliminated due to virtual reality or transhumanism or whatever, there would also cease to exist any governmental forms as well

as everyone would be on the same level by then

but thats all probably not for a long time from now

You should check out Ray Kurzweil and his work The Singularity. He has made many accurate predictions (which came true) in the past few decades in regards to science, technology and society based on such trends. He predicts that, due to our increase in the advancement of nanotechnology and an understanding of how the body works that we may in fact become immortal one day (he says within or around 25 years)
