You should throw the remaining grain outside for the birds to eat.
Thats what I do!

Glad you'r enjoying this.
I source my bags from 2 places, Hoosier Mushroom Company and S.E. Mushrooms. The particular bags featured in this thread today are large gusseted, .5um filter patched spawn bags from S.E. Mushrooms. You can purchase bags from them directly or find their deals on Ebay.
I constructed the lids myself. I used regular PP5 plastic lids designed and used for canning, poked 2 1/16th" holes for GE and covered the holes with synthetic filter disks cut down to the size of quarter for the GE filter, and installed injection ports. I don't inoculate with syringes anymore so all my new lid designs no longer come with injection ports. Just 2 holes punched into the center of the lid covered with a piece of synthetic filter disk.
I fill bags with 5-6 quarts of cooked and hydrated grains. I don't pre-seal bags before sterilization rather use the whole tyvek wrist sleeve stuffed down the folds of the bag then folded accordion style as per RR's methodology. Bags are sterilized @ 20 psi's for 2 hours with a ceramic plate placed over the bags to keep them depressed during the sterilization cycle, let cool to room temps, and inoculated with 1 quart of fully colonized grains. The bags are sealed in front of a flowhood, capturing a plenum of sterile air, twist tied at the top of the bags, and closed using plastic zip ties.

NO problem, man. Hope that helps you.
I like to taking the time to explain and talk about one of my most favorite subjects on the planet. Are you considering making the switch to bags or do you have some experience with making spawn in bags before?

OK I think I'm following? If 1qt jar means 1 mono, then 72 monos is going to be a serious pita at harvest time! Wow!

I feel you man. Go for the grains. Once you find a good source for grains, grains are pretty cheap in comparison to purchasing bags of pre-ground, organic BRF. Plus grains can be ground into flour and substituted for BRF in BRF cakes. Hand ground grain flour is better than pre-ground organic BRF.
Not the best idea to jump into bags if you havn't any experience with grains. Best thing you can do if you wish to start with grains is start small, go around the learning curve of grains a few times, until you gain a feel for and know where to source the materials your working with in your own specific, unique climate/environment and grow situation. Get you case of quart jars and a bag of WBS or rye and follow RR's grain preparation technique that can be found in his videos that you can see samples of if you look in his sig..

Just another day at the office. Lmao Harvest time is not what I'm concerned about. For me, harvest time is the time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. The step I'm dreading the most (truth be told) is the spawning all that spawn to it's respected bulk substrate. For some reason, spawning to bulk is my least favorite of all the steps involved in cultivation. Maybe it's because of the preparation of all that bulk substrate materials involved in that step.
Either way, 50/50 horse manure/coir+'ll be used as the base, bulk substrate. Thinking of adding equal parts wheat straw just to spread the manure and coir that much further, adding another varying source of nutrition for the mushroom mycelium without getting too crazy with the additives, as well as, while in spring months, with the summer months approaching, my region's ambient humidity is rising. IMHE. straw based substrates perform better in humid climates for the straw doesn't dry out as fast as it would if the straw was being used as a bulk substrate material in dry climates, unless your using wheat straw as a bulk substrate material inside of a sterile environment.

Wow, I can't believe that slipped my mind. Agreed, that substrate is definitely going to be a BITCH! Worth every aching hour at harvest time though. You have inspired me!

Good to know, bro. If I can inspire at least one soul around here then I know my job's being done. Thank you for your words of encouragement, shroomeybgood.
Update: 4/23,
Jars are recovering nicely after just 1-2 days from the mycelium being shook apart. Not all of the jars were shook at the same time due to time constraints but were shook within 6 hours from the time the first round of jars were shook.

While the jars were being sorted through, 2 of 72 jars, thus far have become contaminated with 2 separate kinds of bacteria.
One was cob-web mold.

The other of coarse, trichoderma.

These last three jars were found to be well over 95% colonization so the decision was made to not shake these jars.

Almost there.......... (at 100% colonization).

Rye suppliers harvested. Got 400 pounds of it (rye #1), for 70 bux.

Like how clean, freshly harvested rye can be from time to time. This is the rye just after filling the pot with water and then stirring for the first time, no rinse yet.

Hell yeah. This rye only took one rinse with hot water and stirred before it was clean enough to add gypsum, beginning the soak duration. That's going to considerably save some time spent rinsing the rye.

Time to get to work prepping the grains to be loaded into bags and then sterilized. More to come.
