agree, I've recently started using bags myself, and not sure if i'll go back to jars..for the simple reason I always hurt my hand breaking up the mycelium lol

To me, it's not about the use of one container over another in a question of which is best. I use quart jars and spawn bags. 1 fully colonized quart jar of grain spawn into 1 freshly sterilized 5-6 pound grain bag medium.
When transferring colonized grain spawn into large grain bags from quart jars, the mycelium only has to be broken up enough to be allowed to escape the mother jar. Once the grain spawn is inside of the bag, you can gently knead apart the mycelium clumps before or after you seal the bag.
I'v recently begun to think that wide-mouthed pint-sized jars would be ideal for this practice. Just pop off the lid, dump the entire colonized grain cake into the bag, and break it apart inside of the bag. That would eliminate having to bang jars on allotted surfaces and all the possible side effects involved with "banging jars" including your grievance of aching hands caused by "banging jars". Less is more.

For me, each quart jar of fully colonized grains represents one monotub after the quart jars have first been expanded into 5-6 pound spawn bags.
I just tried this as well hamloaf, good thinking, the one quart to spawn bags saves a lot of jar and tyvek hassle, cant believe I not tried this before. perfect amount of spawn for a decent size tub ;less space, quicker colonization.....

Thanks man but I think people have been inoculating large grain substrates with 1 quart of fully colonized grains for a while now.
Yes. Using 1 quart of fully colonized grains to inoculate 5-6 quart spawn bags'll have all that grain colonized in 7-10 days, granted you shake/knead the mycelium apart at 20-70% colonization and your mother jar's mycelium is free of bacterial spores.
I like to be sure to use 1 jar per one bag instead of using 1 jar to inoculate several bags. That way, any contamination caused from the mother jar'll be isolated into only one bag instead of several bags at a time, taking some guess work out of knowing where the contamination came from.

Ok, so I was able to squeeze 27 quart jars that were 3/4th the way full (gotta' leave room for the entry of colonized grains) out of 1, 20 pound bag of premium birdseed mix prepared to be sterilized.
Soaked this batch of birdseed in about a 35% concentrate horse manure tea water along with 3% by volume of gypsum for 10 hours (going for that slow hydration) and boiled the WBS for ten minutes, allowing the WBS to reach the proper surface hydration level for quart jar inoculations of fully colonized grains before loading the WBS into jars.
18 0f the 27 jars are sterilized and cooling to room temperatures. More to come.

haha, A rolled up and bound in duct tape phone book is what I use to break my spawn in jars apart with.
Said fuck it and decided to prepare 4 times the amount of jar mediums to be inoculated with colonized grains from bags. The inoculations are scheduled to take place Monday. For shits and giggles, as well as, for all you myco_voyeurs out there, here goes a shot of the fully colonized bags that are planned to be transfered into quart jars. The bag on the far left is the bag that'll be transfered first. It contains 5 quarts of fully colonized WBS. The 2 bags on the left each have a whopping 9 quarts of fully colonized WBS and clean smelling mushroom mycelium in each one.

Yea, it looked like the levels were off a little bit, I wasn't sure if you were just when you prepped them.

I think you are while you made this post. What do you mean, "it looked like my levels where off a little bit". Says who? Who dictates at what level grains are to be filled into bags for making grain spawn?

"The 2 bags on the left each have a whopping 9 quarts of fully colonized WBS and clean smelling mushroom mycelium in each one."
The one 5 quart bag looked like it was smaller than the other two, that all I meant by it.
I was just joking around.
I just smoked though, so you were almost right about that one,. ....

Nosir. I'm taking a U-turn on this one and going 5 pound bag of fully colonized WBS into sterile quart jar mediums, then back out to spawn bags once the sterile grain WBS mediums become colonized. You follow?
Why?
Why not grain to grain transfer from bag to bag? Going to jars and then back again just adds another step with no benefit. RR

Well, to buy some time basically. Don't currently have the grains on hand to fill the amount of spawn bags needed to do the amount of bag transfers needed to stay on top of the usual growth regimen. Let alone the spawn bags to facilitate. What I do have are jars, some birdseed, and the will to succeed.
I'm aware of the extra step added, as well as, there being no real benefit from jar to bag, back to jar, then out to bag again. Just wound up in a situation that needed to improvised upon and adapted too in order for the situation to be over came. It's been a hectic last month. Waiting for my grain mill to harvest their rye (which should be any day now). Also, waiting to get paid before the ability to pick up more spawn bags will be allotted.
