How does this Horse Poo Look?
    #14209518 - 03/30/11 01:12 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

So I went and gathered some horse manure today from a site where a horse farm dumps their manure.  It is just starting to thaw out here I'm pretty sure the horse manure that I gathered is from last summer or fall.  It has gnats and some decomposes working on it.  It also has some old dead mushrooms in it.  I assume they are from last summer-fall.  My question is whether it looks ok (versus too composted) and whether the other mushrooms and bugs in it it are a problem.  I assume they would be taken care of by pasteurization, but I'm not certain.

I'm having good luck with stable manure from the local fairgrounds. It only needs a couple days of wet weather to leech it enuff for use.

I dunno bout manure that old. Seems like a lot of the nutes would be gone. At least the dead larvae and wutnut are giving back some of the nutrients they stole. I'd expect insect chitin to be edible by the fungus.

how old is too old?

I got some aged manure from a stable of retired race horses.  The owner had a big pile and said the stuff I got was about 6-9 months old.

the problem is that here it's really wet and humid.  I've got a bunch of the poo in my garage, spread out on a table about one nugget thick to dry out.

a few nuggest have some cobwebby mold growing, and one, I swear, is pinning.

not all of them are, but I'm wondering if I should even try to pasteurize.

I think the poo source is fine, I just might want to get more fresh stuff from them and then dry it out in the sun at my place.  I mean, the whole problem is that in my area, there really ins't anything called "sun dried" poo...it rains all the time.

OP, yours looks a bit more composted than most, but it should still be usable.

white stuff could be firefang, which I'm told is a good thing. and you should definitely pasteurize

ahh...firefang...Interesting.

What I meant by "should I even pasteurize" was maybe I shouldn't even bother using this batch of poo, at all.

Sorry for being unclear.

I'm going to investigate some pics of firefang to see what I'm dealing with...

Cheers!

So, I'm pretty sure the next two pics are firefang, but the third is some type of mold (cobweb?)  I could be wrong about the firefang, because it looks to me like there is pinning.  This hpoo is about 9 months old, gotten from a horse stable that piles it up and I think mixes it up from time to time.

mold?

If it is mold or something, is it still usable?  Will pasteurization  make it usable?  Or should I get some better poo?

So, I threw out anything that looked like cobweb or other molds, and after that I gently sprayed those areas with some H202.  Today, I didn't see any molds for now.  I'll keep an eye on it, obviously.

The pins from the last post seem a bit bigger, but I won't take a pic for a few days until I see some significant size change.

What is there today, but wasn't yesterday, are these visible little growths.  I'm sorry for the poor pic quality, but they look like little ice crystals growing up, away from the dung. (and no, it's not freezing here)  Not all of the poo has this, but quite a few do:

can't see much from your pics... just let it dry out on a tarp or cut-open trash bag. all those molds/mushrooms should shrivel up and add some nutrients to the :poop:

after you pasteurize and add a relatively large amount of spawn, it should rip right through all those other competitors.

good luck!

Using a better camera, here are some pics of those odd ice crystal looking things.  Certainly are organic:

I just spawned 6 half pint BFR and vermiculite jars to 3 quarts of the horse manure pictured in the first post, 1 quart of vermiculite, and about a cup of gypsum.  The manure, vermiculite, and gypsum mixture was steam pasteurized.  I'm using a mini monotub made out of the file container pictured below.  I'll let you all know how it goes.  Thanks for the help.
