Pan subbs or foes??

Habitat: Grass. Central california.
Gills:

Stem: Only slightly reddish, with a little fuzziness at top near cap. Generally about 3 inches.. see pics.
Cap:

Spore print color: Black. But I did leave the caps on there for a couple days, is it possible it's just so dark purple that it looks black?
Bruising: None noticed. No bluing... Even though this last picture looks like it has some at the bottom of the middle mushroom, I think it was just an illusion because I was inspecting them hard and didn't see that.

Other Info: If you look at the background of pics 2 & 3 closely you can see other specimens that might help with the ID. I'm too much of an Am, and these are hard to identify.

They look like all foes to me, could you post a picture of the spore print in natural light?

It's getting to be that time of year.. I'm thinking I should probably just put this pic in my signature for the Spring season:
The only real way you will know is to spore print them. Subbs are JET black.

That indeed looks to be a jet black spore print to my eye...

The brown gills and the pale, watery stems are good signs that you have foes. Sometimes their sporeprint can be really dark so you really have to look carefully. Although they may not be what you are looking for, foes are a good indicator species so subb season should be just around the corner(for you anyway).

I know I'll be raking them in soon enough, but I'm going to be sketched on eating them haha. Times like this I wish there were some more experienced hunters around here to ID them in person.

The spore print color looks like dark walnut brown to me.
OP can eat them if he wants though.

There is no blue in the photos, my crappy camera phone just made the mycelium at the bottom appear to have some blue tint. It's an illusion

on second look you're right. i think its easier to distinguish them when they're on aluminum foil ill make sure i find a foe and cinct and have a side by side on aluminum foil for reference.

Also it is easier to see slight color variations if you hold them at an angle to bright sunlight instead of looking straight down on them.

also remember that dark prints will look darker while fresh than they will after they have dried out. if you keep a reference print of P. foenisecii on hand long tern, it will be a little bit lighter than a fresh print of the same.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Should I even look for subbs in grass? According to my book the foes grow in grass while the subbs grow in "manured soils and gardens". But it seems like I remember seeing some posts about lawns covered in subbs.. So

Well.. if they grow in "manure soils", shouldn't a well fertilized yard count?
