Well the illegality of home-brew and distilling varies from state to state.

distilling is federal, there's no variance from state to state other than for licensed distilleries

Owning a still isn't illegal, distilling alcohol is. Stills are used for many different uses, essential oils come to mind.

Let's all not forget Moonshiners are our brothers :hug:

Defying the law to make illicit booze, and buying it to drink it.. A home grow of weed or shrooms, and buying weed and shrooms, extracting DMT, making LSD, all defying the law..
Wheres the difference?

Its all about the freedom to make informed choices what to put in your body, a principle the Shroomery is based on.

Pot growers, moonshiners, all face the same defamation by the Gov't.

Lets not kid ourselves here. Many home distillers distill liquors and liqueurs that put what you buy at the liquor store to shame, and nowadays with crappy oil mixes and factory processes, that isnt a particularly big feat to accomplish anymore.

You don't even need a still, chances are you have all you need in your kitchen RIGHT NOW.

Very occasionally I distill my own liquors, I'm proud to say, for personal use and to give away to friends.

My favorite creations are Absinthe d'Portarlier (made by following a recipe from the 1800s to the letter), Spanish Absenta (so good!), Ouzo, Lemon Brandy and I pass the benchmark test for any home distiller: a presentable, tasty vodka.

In a typical run I take 12kg sugar, top it off to make 50 liters sugar water, add a packet of Alcotec 24h Turbo Yeast  and ferment in 4 days to yield 50 liters 13% alcohol.

With a wok still I reduce this to 12 liters 55% alcohol Single X  (the Xes rating comes from moonshiners and reflects the number of times it is distilled, Triple X or XXX is preferred). My wok still accepts 4 liters and reduces it to 1 liter 4x concentration in an hour. Single X alcohol has 1/4 the yeasty flavors of the fermentation and as such is quite drinkable mixed with juice, but still a bit yeasty.

Then I redilute to 50 liters and repeat the exercise to get 12 liters XX alcohol (Double X). By this second distillation, yeast flavors are brought down to only 1/8 of what they were in the fermentation. This already is quite tasty.

Then I add the fine herbs (highest grade) and some dilution water (depends on the recipe and let the herbs soak 24-48 hours, then I distill it, herbs and all, to the desired concentration of XXX liquor.

If required I macerate herbs or add sugar and add 10ml/liter pharma grade glycerin to finish. With Absinthes I let them age 6 months before drinking.

Presto! quality booze at a few bucks per liter.

I only make very little, so I'm not out to save a buck, but rather to have a handmade booze of unique specifications. (like the 1800s Absinthe, you just cant buy that stuff anymore)

To have a friend enjoy your homemade booze.. thats priceless guys :awesome:

Home brewing/Home distilling FTW!

Awesome, Wiccan.  So your final product ends up being 100% alcohol, or?  I've been meaning to make moonshine for a while and I'm looking for the best Tek.

I redilute my alcohol before distilling the same amount of alcohol from it again. The water is used to wash the alcohol, as it were. My XXX vodka (triple distilled) is made like so:

4 liter fermentation 13% --> 1 liter X
+ 3 liter water --> 1 liter XX
+ 3 liter water --> 1 liter XXX ~45-50% (has 1/32 of the yeasties)
+ distilled water to make it 37.5% alc
+ 10ml glycerin (pharmaceutical purity) per liter

Unless you are bent on moonshine, sugar/turboyeast fermentations are much easier and virtually failproof.

Get 95% Everclear, that should be about the same as moonshine, but maybe with better quality control.  You actually can't get more pure than 95% alcohol unless you use laboratory refining procedures.

BTW You can't by 95% alcohol in California were I live, but it can be ordered online from out of state.

Thanks, but I'm a little confused.  Yours is only 37.5%?  If so or even if not, how do you know what percentage it is?

He dilutes it down to 37.5% from ~50% with water. You can use a hydrometer to measure just how much alcohol is in the mix.
