Dr. Oz Covers the Legalized Medical Marijuana Controversy
March 29, 2011 - newsfuzion.com
By Kathy Wolfe

On today’s episode of The Doctor Oz Show, Dr. Oz and Montel Williams covered whether or not medical marijuana should be legalized and was the most controversial episode yet.

I have covered many different segments of The Doctor Oz Show, but this was the first time I witnessed real anger, frustration and tears among guests and audience members. It was also the first time I’ve seen audience members jumping to their feet, shouting out loud and interrupting the show. Dr. Oz had to repeatedly ask the audience to refrain from shouting out so the discussion could continue.

Medical marijuana is already legal in 15 states in the United States, although some people say it is dangerous to your body. Dr. Oz said it is shockingly simple to get a card making it legal to obtain medical marijuana, especially in California.

Dr. Oz said that the use of marijuana dates back 200 years in the United States and was sold in pharmacies until the late 1930s to treat pain, inflammation and muscle spasms. In 1970 the federal government created the Controlled Substance Act which classified marijuana as a Schedule I narcotic, deeming that marijuana was a harmful substance with no accepted medical purpose. This means that it is not only illegal for recreational use, it also makes it nearly impossible for doctors and scientists to study its possible medical benefits.

Over the last 2 decades, doctors and patients have passionately challenged marijuana’s classification. Dr. Oz said that many in the medical community believe that marijuana can be a powerful tool, alleviating the symptoms of cancer, aids, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, glaucoma and migraines.

Dr. Oz said those that oppose regulating marijuana say that there are FDA approved drugs that can get the same results, and fear that medical marijuana dispensaries could suddenly pop up near schools and other sensitive locations.

Dr. Oz questioned who had it right, and whether or not marijuana was a miracle drug or a health hazard. When he asked the audience how many thought medical marijuana should be legalized, about 50% of the audience raised their hands. He said that was close to the national average, which is about three-fourths of Americans believing that marijuana should be legalized if it’s for medicinal purposes.

Dr. Oz said that patients that use medical marijuana say it works better and in ways that no other medication has worked for them.

Emmy Award winning talk show host Montel Williams was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 12 years ago. He appeared on The Dr. Oz Show today in support of legalizing medical marijuana.

Montel said that at one point he was taking 8 oxycontin a day to manage the constant pain of his multiple sclerosis. Once the side effects of oxycontin became so bad and started making his kidneys function improperly, he knew he had to find another alternative. That was when he tried marijuana to help him manage his symptoms.

Montel, a firm advocate for the legalization of medical marijuana said, “The only thing that has kept me a contributing member of this society for the last 10 years is that I’ve used marijuana every single day.” He went on to say that marijuana may not work for everyone, but it has given him his life back.

Dr. Andrea Barthwell, former director of the White House National Drug Control Policy is firmly against legalizing medical marijuana because of three main issues. She said that she cannot support the smoking of a medicine. She also said that wherever medical marijuana is legalized, the use of marijuana expands and the most vulnerable to that are young people.

Montel refuted that statement, saying it is a proven fact that marijuana use has gone down among teenagers and high school students in states where medical marijuana has been legalized.

Dr. Donald Abrams is an oncologist and researcher in San Francisco and has been recommending medical marijuana for his cancer and aids patients for 30 years. Dr. Abrams said that he thinks of marijuana as an inhaled drug rather than a “smoked drug” and pointed out that inhalation is how asthmatics and those with emphysema treat themselves. He doesn’t think inhalation is a bad delivery system for a medicine.

Dr. Oz pointed out that medical marijuana is legal in his state of New Jersey, but it is virtually impossible to obtain so the law helps no patients who need it.

Dr. Oz said that what he learned today is that if we’re going to make medical marijuana legal, than we’ve got to make it legal. He said it’s not fair to pass laws to make it look like it’s legal and then not be able to give people what they need. He said the states need a system that control who can prescribe marijuana and who can use it. He said that marijuana is not as addictive as other prescription drugs, but that it’s dangerous enough that we need to strictly regulate it.

Dr. Oz said that he wanted to make it clear that he doesn’t believe that it should ever be prescribed for anxiety or stress because that’s how it’s currently being abused. He believes that medical marijuana has got to be used to give patients their lives back, and that it should not be used to take people away from life.

Yet, you can go home and crack a beer open to relieve some stress? I don't fucking get it. I really cannot wait until all the old fuckers (no offense to any grandpa's grandma's who are "cool") Get out of power, and stop fucking it up for all of us who have to live with these shitty rules, I smoke pot cause it makes me a happy camper. But this has all been said before. Hopefully Oprah does something like this, I'd rather it be legal for consumption(18-21) than Only as medicinal*tho having it as a prescription would be AWESOME*, I don't think it is any more dangerous as any of the other Otc pill's you can buy at the dollar store. Im only half way threw the episode but i am Not liking any of the people who are saying " oh its addicting, its creating crime, oh my children" Sheeple of america at there finest, Im almost willing to bet some,(most) of them people there were paid to be against it.

i like how the use of weed butter wasnt mentioned one time.marijuana doesnt need to be smoked to get its effects. in fact from personal experience, id say eating marijuana is alot better than smoking it just for the simple fact that it lasts a lot. this even solves the problem of peopl with respritory problems not being able to get the benefits by smoking. the federal govenment is fighting a losing war and soon enough they will see that

So many things are left out of this arguement everytime.
the biggest arguement seems to come down to the fact that it's smoke.  Which is one of several ways of delivering the desired effects. I'm a former all state athelete. Smoking use to be something i never did, then started cause i love weed. I know own a volcano vaporizer. It's all i use now and i feel great. I take it to a party and suddenly no one smokes, they vape. Why is this never discussed, or even edibles. Foods arn't as widely aviable due to the law. Legalize it and edibles would spring up everywhere. Smoking isnt an acceptable way to take medicine, but it's completely acceptable way to get a nicotine buzz.

It cant be legalized cause people might use it to get high....so?!?! Persuit of happiness, dont put a law regulating happiness because it wont be effective. We drink purely for the "high, buzz w/e". I'm sorry that im in law school now and when i go drinking I get nothing done that night and feel like shit the following day. I smoke, I'm just as satasified as if i went out. Then if more work needs done later in the night, i can do it. When i wake up in the morning, no hangover. Seems to be a much more responsible decision. Infact, most people i know in a masters program use to drink very frequently and learned that they cant cut it doing that anymore. Most now drink about twice a month and smoke much more often now. Obviously the alcohol industry is agianst this.

Finally the say that it would increase crime and teen use. The only thing that causes both of these things is the current law. Weed is worth a lot of money, why? cause it's illegal. I'm sure most here know that it's not hard to produce. Legalize it, regulate it, the crime would disappear. Look at alcohol, prohibition caused gangs to spring up everywhere, cause it was lucrative. There's no crime w/ selling alcohol now, just w/ people under the influence. Which is delt with, and obviously not the same as marijuana. Regulating it would make it harder for kids to get, vendors wouldnt sell to minors in fear that they would get shut down. Dealers atm sell to anyone any age... they make money.

Are you kidding me? People who are concerned with youth getting their hands on drugs should be the first advocates of drug legalization. I am 18 years old and I can tell you first hand that I can get pot any time of the day easily, but if I want alcohol it's a bit more of a task. Legalization is the only effective form of regulation.

I bet the only reason "DR." oz disagrees with using cannabis for stress and relaxation purposes is because he's on nation television and the last thing he needs is to be criticized by the ignorant ladies that tune into Oprah everyday.

30 or 40 years ago people were saying soon as the old folks die off, we will have legal pot. They died off and its still illegal. Say thank you to obuma for keeping his campaign promise (not)

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
