yet another how to dry mushrooms thread

I have been doing a lot of reading on how to dry mushrooms because my first flush ever is ready for harvest but there seems to be a lot of disagreement about whether or not heat is OK and that oxidation causes mushrooms to lose potency. So three questions 1. how hot is too hot? 2. If oxidation causes potency loss why would I put the mushrooms in front of a fan? 3. What is the best way to dry mushrooms while preserving the maximum amount of potency?

its old outdated info that heat kills potency, alot of ppl use ovens,
I even started doing something that I saw RR posting about, and grilling my active's, and there is no potency loss..
use a dehydrator if you want to get it done the quickest and simpliest way..
you can use a fan, but will take a good while
as well you can place your oven on the lowest temp setting, and leave the door cracked open, and keep check on them until cracker-dry

Heat dose decrease potency but you have to get it hot enough.. like burning them with a flame.

Cheap food dehydrators from Wally World work, and the heating element can be disconnected.
You can use Drierite/drywall/calcium sulphate as a desiccant, which can be recharged in a hot oven.
Damp rid from Lowes works, but turn liquid, and can be recharged in an oven.
Combo - fan for a few hours to get them drying, and then desicate in a chamber.
The desicant chambers work fast, and preserve the product well.
Also, sprinkling vitamin C on them, while wet, absorbs and inhibits oxidation.

this is not true at all...'burning them with a flame', so you're saying you're going to burn them with a flame and get them hotter then about 1200 degree's on a hot grill? I dont think so
now if you put them in extreme heat for long periods of time then yes, but as far as a dehydrator, or oven long enough to cracker-dry them, there will be no noticeable potency loss

i've put this shit to the test i don't care what anyone chimes in on this if you over heat 90 degree + you will experience loss of potency plain and simple i completly fucked my first ever batch from letting them sit on the next to bottom rack of a food dehydrator this is not a hard concept and here is your easiest way fuckin period get a bucket of damprid (automotive section of wally) use fan to get shrooms dry to the touch on the surface after that put shrooms in paper bag, fold, drop in bucket of damprid. DONE

were they grown using a multispore inoculation? you never know... the lack of potency very well could have been genetic.. you had no way of knowing what the potency was BEFORE you dried them, right?

exactly, ppl grow a weak batch and they're quick to jump to THIS WAS WHY THEY aRENT POTENT...fail to realize that its completely random genetic's..

Completely 100% incorrect. I've extracted psilocybin with boiling ethanol at 75C. Lots of people make tea, cook mushrooms on pizza, or even BBQ them.
Dehydrator is the way to go, with damprid for finishing/touching up.

Don't go over 170, lower if you can. My dehydrator runs around 130. Faster drying certainly affects taste and texture even if the magic is not degraded.

b+ cake first flush cracker dried in dehydrator... effects: pure and utter disappointment... same cake second flush, ate straight off the cake same relative weight to dried amount: sky rockets in flight... its ok if i am incorrect but cool drying is the way to go imo.

Dessicants would be less invasive to structural and chemical properties. Drawing the water out rather than forcing it out with heat or um, shaking... lol. Ensuring that the finished product is the same as fresh, only with water removed. Yes?

Although I am sure dehydrator works well, desiccants are amazing and work fantastically if you air dry with a desk fan for the first 12-24 hours.
I use the same epsom salt that you can but from target, $5 for 5lbs. The chemical makeup is MgSO4·7H2O, note the 7 water molecules at the end. Take the epsom salt out of the bag and bake it at 250-300 for a couple of hours, stirring it ever 30 mins or so, then put it in the bottom of a plastic tub. Add a couple of napkins, your partially dried fruits, and then the tight fitting lid. (if the lid isnt tight fitting, layer saran wrap 10 times or so to make a thick sheet and put that over the open tub before the lid) Wait a mere 24 hours and you'll have cracker dry fruits.
When your done, dry the salts in the oven to use them again, or throw them in the tub and take a well deserved epson salt bath. Cheap, reusable, and no heat needed. You seriously cant beat it.

I got a $30 presto dehydrator from walmart. Runs at 165F and i have never lost potency. Heat is needed to dry cracker dry. Oxidation is a potency killer. You want to get them as dry as possible as fast as possible. Fans, boxes, dessicants, etc. I have tried many ways. Dehydrator is the best way. They get cracker dry in several hours not days.

You figure you don't lose potency? I air dry with fans asap, then I dehydrate with a presto unit until cracker dry.I will skip the air dry and just dehydrator them until dry. This my first batch and very potent, so I am sure the way I dried them worked well.

OK going straight to dehydrator doing a few more-
What temp should I use please? I just use the lowest settings? I have been told the Alkaloids will start to break down at higher heat settings.

Mine runs at 165F i hear of plenty of people running it at 210F. Pretty much your highest setting or 180 or something of that nature. Not sure a precise temp but heat wont affect it like thwy used to always say.

The highest heat it goes.
We make tea with boiling water. Well over 170f of a dehydrator. You can put magic mushrooms on pizza in a 450f oven for 15m they still work. They've been deep fried, tempura battered in 350+ oil And cronicr even pressure cooked some shrooms and still tripped on them
You know you're talking to someone you shouldn't listen to if they say heat breaks down the alkaloids. Yea like 450+ degree heat
