Who can solve this math problem?

this should take about 10 seconds.....
Two bicycles are 10 miles apart. On each bicycle there is a fly on the handlebars. The two bicyles begin to move toward each other at 10 miles an hour. At the same moment, the flies fly toward each other at 15 miles an hour. When the flies meet, they turn around and fly until they reach the bicycles,at which point they turn around and fly to each other until they meet. This goes on until the bicycles meet.
When the bicycles meet, what is the total distance the flies have flown?

As background, this problem was given at a party of government people, celebrities, and industry leaders, etc. No one could do it, until they asked a famous physicist who thought for a moment and gave the correct answer. It's a no-brainer problem.

Each fly went 7.5 miles.

10 miles is incorrect.

This is correct. explain how you got it, or I can explain. It's a very simple concept and most people overlook it because they are blinded by all the information.

I've never really been any good at math. There are three kinds of people in this world. Those that can count and those that can't. And I'm one of 'em.

Pretty easy, each bike is heading towards the other at 10mph, so they are going to meet in half an hour, so each fly will be going 15mph for 30 minutes. Now if you said displacement, I would have to think a little more.

Well, hailofthethief got it.
The bicycles travel at 10 miles per hour, and they are 10 miles apart so they meet in thirty minutes. If the flies are traveling at 15 miles an hour, in 30 minutes each has gone 7.5 miles.

It takes 1 hour to travel 10 miles at 10 mph.

Wouldn't the flies be traveling 15mph for 1 hour therefore traveling 15 miles?

They're going towards each other all the time so the distance is halved.

How so? I'm not saying you are wrong, I am just curious how you would go about it.
