Prof P, its the same with cakes, or with a tub thats not clear...put a light on top, with a plexiglass window at top, and place at the window as well..
they grow towards fresh air, which is why lack of FAE gives tall lanky stems thats just my experience....

for the record i hate doing this shit but no one seems to listen unless you got a post to back it up ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
boogawho said: One of my cakes is beginning to show pins.. only problem is that they seem to be growing down towards the perlite. From what I've read this is due to the RH being higher in the lower part of the FC. Is this correct?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No, it isn't. Sometimes they turn toward the perlite because it's reflecting light, and they grow towards light. If it looks like the cap is going to go into the perlite, slip a small piece of foil in the way to keep the cap clean. RR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
the flip flops on lighting , like i said are getting a bit irritating ... someone needs to pin this shit down with a concrete answer ...
and btw biologys your also right they do also grow towards fresh air ...

WOW, dare I comment on such a heated debate? My first FC was a medium sized tub with an 18" fluorescent light. The light was equipped with slots and screws, so I just mounted it to the inside of the lid (like under a cabinet). It would slide off for easy sterilizing and my little mushy friends seemed to do just fine, often for several flushes of richly colored mushrooms. It worked so well I have just always done this, for ease and to have a somewhat self-contained FC. (That's my OCD shining through) Mushrooms do require light for fruiting. The ideal quantity, quality and placement of which is unclear, and likely to vary slightly with strain origin. Good luck, and the main thing to worry about, is to not worry so much! You've made it this far.

haha its not heated ... probably sounds that way ... im personally more irritated that i dont have something concrete to go by as im not a mycologist per se but a cultivator of mushrooms ... my book knowledge is very limited in the field so i live and die but what some of these fore-runners in the field say and my own experiences ...
the thing thats really bothering me is its more or less conclusive that light is a beneficial application when it comes to cubensis , yet RR just said its counter-productive when directly applied ...
ever since i started using 4 ft 32 watt fluorescent bulbs directly over my grows my pin-sets have flourished greatly as have my fruit bodies size and growth specs ...
i want answers damn it ! lol

mushrooms dont REQUIRE light..they will grow in pure darkness...
but for OPTIMAL performance light is beneficial.

Thank you for that correction. A mushroom will grow toward fresh air to give its spores the best chance of finding air currents that can carry the spores away to settle down, start a colony of thier own. Somewhere with plenty of room for a potentially very large colony.
Hmmm, I got plenty of room at my place...
I can see what RR was saying about light from different angles. The reflected nature of the light mushrooms have adapted to in the wild, would cause it to strike the mushroom at many different angles. I might experiment with placing or adding lights between FCs, just to see what changes.

oh, I am going to, there will be a grow log in the IRF edible grow log's, no pun intended. I will also start a thread in the edible section once they start fruiting late summer-early fall,
This years log line up,,, ..... , shitake, hen of the woods, turkey tail, reishi ling chi, golden oyster, and phoenix oyster.
We cut up 3 huge maples that came down out back this winter a couple weeks ago. The yield should be pretty nice, \\\
There is at least 2 tons of wood out there
Sorry for the thread jack bro,....

you could do that if you can find a way to secure the top edges to keep the humidity in there ... duct tape would do the trick ... if it fits pretty snug atop the rim though then the weight of the light should keep it flush enough to do the trick ...

np ... i noticed you had the light sitting on its spine ... youll get more downward directed light if you put it on its side i think ... you may also be able to put it bulb down if its like the one i had ... the ends actually hold the bulb off the plastic and stand it up ... best of luck !

oh yeah i did that to show you guys that it fogs :3
i actually ended up cutting a hole in it because the acrylic glass was letting too much air out now i'll drill holes into the glass and gorilla tape it to the lid. also, i will put it face down and gorilla tape the ends to the lid. i tried it many different ways, the side provides a biased light (half has less lighting), diagonal is seems to be more even than horizontal in that it has a more surface area covered (the light is bigger than the glass i have by about 1 inch)
thanks again shroomery. lots of love. i should be ok now! talked with my supplier and it gets shipped today (so it should be here in a couple days)
