Help with lighting please (pics)
    #14207569 - 03/30/11 02:15 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Ok so I need to get the lighting situated for the grow. I have everything except the ideal lighting down. I have a closet, it has a 48" florescent light that is 6500K. I have this smaller one as well that used to be blacklight but is now an 18" 6500K. The top of the tub is not clear. I could NOT find ANY clear headed tubs that were the right size. I searched all over the forum and no luck on this query. A lot of thoughts on LED lighting or hazards or even plexi glass but unless I don't drill holes in the glass it will still fog up. Help please :s

In order to have the mushrooms grow up (towards the light) I need to get the light to be right in the middle of the lid. Do I put it in there? I blew in it to show it gets really foggy REALLY quick so humidity would probably fry it if it was inside. Is there a way to waterproof it? What can I do? I absolutely have no money for LED lighting. I spent all of my money on the tubs and jars and syringe and such. I have a month till next pay day. :frown:

Here is my setup (haven't drilled holes yet):

A super cheap way to make it clear would be get sum saran rap cut a large whole in the lid and put a layer or two over.  Just get some screw hooks and some chain and hang the light as close to the bin as possible

No screw hooks or a chain. Also, saran wrap is very prone to keeping contams I hear. It's got the sticky surface you know?

I have put the light on the side before. They will still grow. They might bend toward the light, but it should not matter.

You could cut a hole the size of the bulb, or a little smaller, and plug the hole with the shield on the light. If you were gonna drill holes anyway, then a little extra ventilation should not hurt.

If you don't wanna use saran wrap, use plastic, like from a ziploc bag or a clear plastic bag.

with no money or supplies I dont know what you would do. I wouldnt put the light in the box tho that is disaster waiting to happen just need to get some clear plastic cut a whole in that lid and duct tape it to the lid.  As far as the light goes you need to figure out how to hang it above the box if it dosnt create any heat you could probably just set it on top of the box or figure out a way to prop it up from the sides.

if you re in the US go to Lowe's and get a plexi glass tile for 6 bucks and have them cut it in 2 pieces ... cut a square out of your lid and use water proofing tape to make a window ... a lot of ppl like gorilla tape but for this i like the metallic silver stuff ... the window will last for years ... i know what you re saying though damn bins with clear lids are hard as hell to find these days ... another thing you can do is spray paint the bottom of your lid white and just have the light on the side ... they will still grow to the reflection as its a little easier for them to grow vertically then bendy ... may have a bit of a tilt to them but they will be fine ...

if youre that broke you can cut a gallon ziplock bag into an 8 inch sheet and use that for a window instead of a plexi glass panel ... its a bit more resilient than saran wrap ... or as stated above a window works great as the suns light is the ideal strength and color ... its strong enough to illuminate the entire bin ...

Prof P, is this better?

It took me years to figure out SWIM wasn't real. I used to think SWIM did some awesome stuff, but then could turn around and be a retard. And that guy was all over the place with posts.

I like your avatar too. Very nice.

I have been following your stuff. It is very good. I bookmarked a lot of your threads incase I need to refresh some ideas.

I also like following OneU. Reminds me of myself way back in the day, so unsure of himself, but learning fast.

We usually just tell them that the FED's are on mycotopia so they they should just do their shopping over there,

Funny shit though bro, I love the avatar too. It is classic!

mushrooms do not grow towards the light. You can put the light anywhere as long as it reaches the whole surface.

They will grow towards light bro.

The inside cover of "lets grow mushrooms" has a *picture of a casing growing downward over the sides to get to the light that RR put under neath them.... assuming he was the grower.

* look at the PE casing on the right

Yup, you only need the light when it pins, after pinning you can throw it back in the dark if you like.

I've posted at least a hundred times that light from the sides is better than straight up.  How often in nature is the sun directly overhead?

Hang your light from wire or chains so that it's a few inches away from the side of the terrarium.

theres no real explanation here for me , sounds more like theory ... if nature is our measuring stick then i can say how often do plants suck pure nutrients up from a liquid source , pretty much never , but they grow pretty damn well that way still ... as do they when the light is directly over-head ... yes i know they are totally different but i mean its basically the same example you're using just in opposite ... i need an actual reason ...

i know you're a mycological expert , and i agree with %99 of everything you say , but i need more reasoning than " its not exactly as nature does"

i think we have to take into consideration that fluorescent lighting is not the same kind of light that we get from the sun ... that it is a much cooler brand of light ... perhaps that is why it is such as you describe in nature ... idk ... ive always had great results pushing my light source and from directly overhead ...

I don't want to argue with you guys but I am looking at a tub right now that is on its second flush. The only light it is getting is from the window it is sitting next to; to the right of.

That tub has fruits that are stretching from the right t the left, directly toward the sunlight that shines into it.

There is no way this is coincidental.

It happens every time I put a tub near a window like that.

If I put them on the other side of he room, they grow in the other direction, again toward the window.

You guys got an explanation for that?

Kuz I have always chalked it off as the light being the culprit, although it could be the extra heat theat the light causes that they are growing towards?

I doubt it though.......

i agree with you too man ... this isn't my first barbeque either lol ... I've seen it happen over and over again ... the flip flop povs on light are getting a bit irritating ...

how could there be a general consensus on how mycelium fruiting or no , is benefited by light , yet it doesn't seek it in its growth ? sorry I've seen it happen too many times ... not to mention all the  testimonials of it doing just that ...

its pretty damn obvious from the picture you posted that those pe are growing towards the reflection on the plastic thats on each side ... one side being rolled up for the pic ...
