damn, that is a shitty story. i've been duped before when buying used cars. i trust NO ONE when i go to look at a car. i bring my own compression test kit with me because i don't take peoples word for it when looking at a used vehicle.

might i suggest "flipping" geo metros. they are cheap to buy, cheap to fix and will sell immediately (with gas at $3.50 a gallon everyone wants a car that gets over 40 mpg). most of the time people sell them with burnt out valves (carbon builds up quick in these little three cylinder engines) and you can find 'em for less than $500 bucks.

by the way, your cookie monster sig is the awesome.

We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

Lol thanks man. Yeah I've thought about the Geo Metro thing, but they usually just don't have the profit margin I'm looking for. Even though they would probably sell well, they just aren't worth much in my area. No one wants them.

I do have AAA but since it *ran* I figured I'd be able to drive it home and finish fixing it there. Little did I know how bad off it actually was. Also, AAA is kind of a gyp. They only allow 4 tow trips per year and I only get 100miles towing total. I've already used about 45 or so, I'm not sure if it would be worth it to use the rest of the miles on this car.

invest in a tow bar and a hitch, doesnt take much to pull a car that can roll

IDK then pay for a tow somehow w/o getting ripped off? i still wouldnt of drove it if you had a bad feeling about the deal. Bad news if  the engline blew cause of somthin you did and not the person you bought it from.

No the engine isn't blown, I stopped the car when the oil light came on. It will still crank and run rough, but the problem I believe is the rings are worn causing low compression. I don't think its really worth rebuilding, if thats the case I'll probably have to let it go for scrap $$$.

what color was the smoke?  It's odd that once it warmed up it started dumping oil and not before that.  I've had times where I did shit like let my car idle for 30 minutes and then it shot out white smoke which made me think head-gasket, but was just carbon build up and went away in a 1/4 mile.

The oil in the dipstick is perfect, and the smoke didn't smell like coolant, so that leads me to believe its not the head gasket. Although they just recently changed the oil, and they might have been cheap bastards and not put any polypropylene glycol in the radiator.

If it was that would be awesome, since thats WAAAAY easier to fix than the entire engine. It was night and the color of the smoke was hard to tell. I thought it looked blue, but I'll know more tomorrow when I go back down there. If its the headgasket I'll definitely have it towed back up here. A compression test will tell all. Keep your fingers crossed!

if the hg is really fucked the compression will still be off. Any oil in the coolant or overheating?

Nah, no overheating. Thats what I meant by the compression test will tell all, usually when a head gasket goes the compression will be very low in only two consecutive cylinders and ok in the others.

Not really...I built a 20x16 insulated shed with my dad, but that was years ago. Why?

Also, I got the car towed back to my house, had to drive 1.5hours to meet the tow truck at the car (stupid rules:crankey:) and did the compression test. 0psi in all cylinders, I didn't add oil to see if its rings yet, but I'm fairly sure it is. I'm thinking instead of rebuilding the engine I might just buy a low mileage engine and swap it in, then sell for $2k or so.

Or alternatively, sell it for $600 to someone who wants to do that themselves. If I swap a motor in its going to deplete the last of my reserves (about $600) and it will take considerably longer and be a lot more work for about $1k. Guess which option I'd rather do. :smirk:

So I'm going to clean it up and take some pictures tomorrow, and I suppose I'll have to get the title in my name. :crankey: I really didn't want to have to do that, but the stupid bitch notary was a friend of hers and made me do everything by the book. I hate following all the rules!:crankdre:

Whatever, this is a learning experience. Woo-saa, hakuta matata and all that.  :levitate:

The reason I asked about Carpentry skills, is because this time of the year people like to buy outdoor furniture, like picnic tables and shit.

I had basic, minimum carpentry skills and last year I decided to buy a table saw ($200) and some cheap PT pine and build an octagonal picnic table for my Mom for mother's day.  It was fairly easy to learn how to build following a design of a table my uncle built for me for a house warming present...

Just from loading it up at my house and unloading it at her house, I had 3 different people ask me if they were for sale and how much, I pulled a number out of my ass, and said "$400, sanded and sealed..." and they said "not bad, are you making more?"

Long story short, I wound up building a few picnic tables, which cost about $80 in parts, and only 3-4 hours to build one, and was making $300 per table.

My mother's neighbor asked her if I built the porch swing in her front yard, I didn't actually make it, but she told her I did, and we set up a deal and I wound up building one for the woman, cost me about $110 to build, and she gave me $650 for it.

Another lady my mom worked for, some rich woman, wanted me to make her 15 standard outdoor, wooden chairs, (why she wanted that many chairs, I have no idea) and was willing to pay me $2250 for the job.
I broke it down to costing around $500 for materials, and would have taken me maybe 10-12 hours to complete and would have profited around $1700 in less than 2 days of work.
I never did the deal because I started working full time that month, but I could've made a lot of money.

It's something to think about, broadening your skills... carpentry is fun to me and you can be creative and visionary with the designs you make. It's fairly easy to learn, and you can make some good money doing orders like that with the freedom of being on your own watch... not a bad way to make a little extra cash if you're going to school or have a part time job or something.
