Well...it was bound to happen. Not really though.
    #14205879 - 03/29/11 08:34 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Yeah, it wasn't really *bound to happen* it was completely my fault. I've been trying out buying cars with problems on craigslist, fixing and cleaning them up and then reselling. I haven't found any cars with potential lately and my money was running out, and I got desperate and broke my rules. Let everyone learn a lesson from this.

1. Never buy a car that you don't know whats wrong with it.
2. Inspect the car thoroughly before buying. And, MOST IMPORTANTLY,
3. Listen to your gut.

I found a 2001 Ford Escort Z2X with 188K on it for $800, it needed a *tune up* (bullshit, as a soon found out*, a wheel bearing, and an inspection. First, the lady never mentioned the wheel bearing, which is par for the course when buying a car. Second, I pulled the spark plugs and they looked fine, which means that it probably didn't need "just a tune up."

I know this. I ignored it. The engine had marker on it like it was from a junkyard. I told myself that maybe only the the timing belt cover was from the junkyard, or MAYBE the whole engine was, but it was a low mileage engine that just needed my genius mechanic skills to fix. Who the fuck am I kidding, I'm not a genius mechanic.

It had no gas in it, so I couldn't risk a long test drive, which I see now is exactly how the bitch wanted it. I drove it up the street and back, no smoke, runs rough, thats fixable.

So we settle on $600, I pay her and we get the title signed over to me which isn't how I like to do it, I prefer simply to get the title signed and notarized for the person who buys it FROM ME, taking myself completely out of the equation. Saves me money getting titles and keeps the gov out of my business.

I drive down the road, the car warms up, starts smoking like a freight train, then 5 miles down the road the oil light blinks on and oil apparently gets dumped into the cylinders, judging from the smoke screen I laid down behind me. The engine is most likely worthless and the car is parked in a city 1 and a half hours away from me. Awesome. I hate people, I hate cars, and I hate myself for falling for this stupid bitches stupid trick.

Let this be a lesson to you folks, ALWAYS TRUST YOUR GUT when it comes to shit like this. Its a lesson I just learned the hard way.

Fuck.

Cars should have to pass inspection before AND after changing hands, not just afterwards so the buyer doesn't get stuck with some invisible problem :bored:

Yup, I thought of that. But ignored it. I feel very, very stupid right now. I realize she is a piece of shit for concealing this problem and I hope she has a heart attack and dies, but I also know that when you go to buy a car, its BUYER BEWARE. And I ignored my gut instinct and there ya go. I'm pretty bummed right now. I don't know if I'll have enough money left over to fix it and sell it. I can't in good conscience sell it without telling the potential buyers about the problem, so until that is fixed its basically worth scrap.

At least it was only $600, they sell junk cars around here for spare parts or to fix up for $300, and they don't run at all.

Try to fix it up to where it's drivable and sell it to a teenager, that just got his license, for a grand or two (Most every day parents don't wanna shell out too much for a rookie driver).

Unless it's gonna cost you more money than it's worth to fix up, then you're boned.

In good condition, the car's blue book is $2100. I am going down tomorrow to compression test it and see what I can find out about it, and I'll know more then. From what I can tell though, it looks like the rings or the bores are fucked, as well as the oil pump. It might be just the oil pump and the valve guides, but I doubt it since it ran so rough.

I almost feel like I deserve it for being so goddamn stupid. It was a rookie trick, and I fell for it by not having the right sized attachment for my compression tester. I totally TRIED to test it, but even though I couldn't I bought it anyway.

This'll teach me to be more careful. If nothing else in life, I've learned to fucking figure out what I did wrong and learn from it. I figure I'll have this "life" shit down PAT by the time I die. lol

OP, I don't know where you live but in Ohio you could file a civil suit under the "Lemon law".  Since she didn't tell you the truth about the cars condition and set it up so that you couldn't take it for a long enough drive to determine that it was seriously fucked you would have a winnable case here.  I think.

Maybe check your local laws or ask a lawyer?

Good luck man!  Hope it all works out in the end.

Also man, unless you really know what you're doing, like restoring classic and historic cars, there is a lot of risk and not a lot of money in fixing up cars, unless you're doing it on a fairly larger scale with paid employees and mechanics, like a dealership.

What you should do if you want to make some real money, is learn county coding restoration to HUD (housing and urban development) houses and flipping them for a profit.

The housing market is shit right now, but there's still money to be made in flipping houses.

You can buy a house now with 0% down and a 4.35% 30/yr fixed mortgage and get sellers to pay for closing costs.... you'll only need a few grand in materials on houses that only require scant to moderate renovations, then you can rent them out for a while to cover the mortgage costs while turning a profit from your tenants, do fix ups while they're residing there with profits, in 2 years sell the house, make 30grand.    Do this with about 2 or 3 houses man, you'll be set to become a commercial property owner.

And, i'm not sure if the government is still doing this, but I think you still get a tax credit for buying a house.    I went to settlement on a house last April, and I'm getting an $8,000 tax credit from Uncle Sam.

I have terrible credit, and less than $2k working capital. The car flipping WAS going well, my previous two cars I made $2k and $1800 profit, respectively. It took a little too long for each car, so it wasn't really making much per week, which was why I was planning on investing about $1k total in this car and selling it within a week or two for $2k, which is good money for me. I just fucked it up though.

I doubt we have that, and I make it a point to not rely on government assistance in anything that I don't have to, i.e. police or court. Not that it always works out in my favor, but I knew what I was getting into and I should have been more careful.

If your not a experienced mechanic or have a good shop to wrench at, you  are  most likely asking for trouble flipping cars. Also im pretty sure volvo parts are like buying BMW or Volkswagen parts. Not good if you wanna fix that car. :2cents:
