armadillo repellent
    #14205446 - 03/29/11 07:17 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Does anybody have any tips on getting rid of an armadillo?  Preferably homemade remedies...

I have one that comes into my yard and digs huge holes every night.  And yes, I have tried shooting it with a BB gun but it just bounced off the shell.  Thanks.

I bet a dog would be a pretty awesome armadillo repellent.

I have a dog, but she's blind. It's kinda funny watching her try and chase it around the yard...

The best way to get rid of an armadillo is to catch it and send it to me.
What state are you in? If your close enough to were I am, I'll come get it if you can trap it.

Damn. To far for a weekend drive.

You will have to go with the 5 step plan.

1. Get a box,
2. Tie some string to a stick,
3. Prop up one side of box with the stick.
4. Pull string when armadillo enters the box.
5. Fed-ex the box to my house.

I have discovered that you can pick these things up like a turtle.  This will be my next attempt, I do not want to have to buy a trap.  :jew:

It's not all that easy to get close enought to pic k them up. They run faster then you might think.

If you catch a real young one they can make interesting pets. I had one for two years. One day he just disapeared. Someone stole him or just let him out of his pen.
No. he did not share a pen with my gator.

[image]http://louie12.jpg [/image]last night while walking mr moto (male chinese sharpei) he almost got into it with an armadillo, i watch for critter at nite the last thing i want is to have to take mr moto to the vet a 4am.  he has 2 possum kills to his credit and he want a third kill bad.  however my neighbor turned him in, caught him leaving the yard in daylite (he jumped the fence) he used to have access all night long, no more  anyway my mother who lives nearby had a armadillo living under her house.  i bought a bag of cement to fill the den?  the clerk at ace hardware suggested a old florida treatment put broken glass in the wet cement, so when the armadillo would dig he'd get cut, i didn't do that but perhaps it may work for you.  even if your dog could see i don't if you want it to get hurt, if you can get rid of the source of food, grubs or whatever  i have had coworkers that had them tearing up their yard and they put a bunch of chemicals to kill the grubs and whatever they eat.  i work late so i take mr moto out several times during the night and see and hear all sorts of critters. last night the armadillo was still and we came right up on him, he seemed to go after mr moto, i pulled him away and the armadillo ran the other way, but they aren
t that smart.  sorry for the rambling i am new in this forum and have a good buzz, what a nice night and moon it sure is nice living florida

It sure is. Armadillos are super dumb, I see them dead on the side of the road ALL the time.  I saw him the other morning on my way to work, hobbling back to wherever it is he comes from. I almost got out of my car and grabbed him, but I decided not to. This time, anyways.

You should play a game of cricket with the armadillo. I'm sure it won't even come back.

i saw mr armadillo last nite, mr moto wanted him bad, he stood there stood up on his hind legs then went into the culvert, a minute later he came out the other side.  mr moto was very excited, the armadillos don't bother my yard, but they can do alot of damage.  if you can remove the source of the food you have a good chance of getting rid of them,  did you consider getting a trap, you can maybe borrow one from the humane society or buy one used, then drop it off somwhere else  i would think they would be easy to trap considering how stupid they are.  what a beautiful day the confederate jasmine is in bloom

Make sure you're not going to get rain for a few days.
Spread powdered red pepper in the areas he likes to dig.
And
Boil another container of red pepper, mix with 2 gallons of water and 2 Tbsp dish soap, then use a pump-up sprayer to spray a 4 foot boarder around the whole yard.

I was told it works by a friend living in Texas. He tried it after he lost several thousand $$$ in sod and landscaping to armadillos. He said it worked first time and hasn't seen any since.

Yep. Her name is Boots. She was hand raised from the day she hatched. When we moved here I was too busy to set up here cage right away.  I let her live under my bed. It was only going to be a few days but she adapted so well she ended up having free run of the house for almost 3 years.
Until... we got a cat.
Now she has a pen and pool in the basement.

The whole story should be told in another thread.
SORRY ABOUT THE INTERRUPTION
