U.S. Sen. Bob Casey urged the Drug Enforcement Administration on Tuesday to immediately issue a temporary ban on two of the chemicals found in bath salts.
In a letter sent to DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart on Tuesday, Mr. Casey asked that two of the chemicals commonly found in bath salts - MDPV and mephedrone - be temporarily controlled, which would classify the chemicals as Schedule I substances for up to one year.
The temporary ban would allow the Department of Health and Human Services to research the substances on behalf of the DEA in order to determine if they should be permanently scheduled, said Barbara Carreno, a DEA spokeswoman.
Temporary scheduling applies to substances that have no accepted medical use, are being abused and pose a risk to public health.
Earlier this month, Ms. Carreno said, the DEA temporarily scheduled chemicals found in synthetic marijuana products, commonly marketed as K2 or Spice.
In his letter to Ms. Leonhart, Mr. Casey cited a spike in poison control center calls nationwide regarding bath salts - from 298 in 2010 to 1,196 in 2011 so far - and recent incidents in Northeast Pennsylvania that have made the legal substance infamous locally.
In the midst of a bath salt binge, Ryan Foley, 25, 1316 Cornell St., Scranton, broke into the monastery at St. Ann's Basilica early in the morning of March 9 and stabbed the Rev. Francis Landry as he slept, according to police.
On Monday, Donna Zilla, 40, of East Warren Street, Dunmore, and Michele Pace, 39, of Mary Street, Throop, were arrested in Wilkes-Barre for allegedly driving recklessly while high on bath salts and with Ms. Zilla's three-year-old daughter in the car.
While it is not yet temporarily scheduled, MDPV is being researched by the DEA, Ms. Carreno said.
Mephedrone is considered an analog of methcathinone, a Schedule I controlled substance.
That designation allows cases involving the substance to be prosecuted under the Federal Analog Act of the Controlled Substances Act, which allows substances with a chemical structure substantially similar to the chemical structure of a schedule I or II drug to be treated as a schedule I drug if they are intended for human consumption.

just leave methylone alone, seriously. It doesn't have a high abuse potential and is really therapeutic. I might have to stock up on it, huh

I just love this idea that the government can just unconstitutionally ban things whenever it feels like it. It's just so wrong on so many levels.
You just can't take anything they do seriously when they just ignore the real scourge of America - alcohol and tobacco.
I also love this "temporary" scheduling while they "research the substances on behalf of the DEA". Yeah, I'm sure that research will be fair and unbiased.
Fuck prohibition. When will Americans come to their senses?

I've heard this from a few people already, is this true? High without many side-effects and low risk of addiction? I should look into this stuff.
-------------------- In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.

It's advertisements like these that haven't helped the RC market.

That pic is hilarious. If I'd seen that before I'd probably want to buy bath salts!

All that applies to this stuff. People really are hurting themselves with it. Selling it over the counter at gas stations is probably not a good idea.

Its not "Americans" its the government. More people picked "a joint" than "collection plate" on Family Feud whenever the question was "What gets passed around?" I'm sure "Americans" would love to see their drugs treated as something that is taxed and sold and regulated, not prohibited.

Inclined to agree with doc_t on this one.
Though not completely. Random RCs with vague labels and descriptions should not be sold over the counter.
What happens when you do that is the marketing for said bath salts or 'plant food'. Is the labeling basically describes all the good things about the drug, and none of the risks. This is not responsible on anyones part.
If someone wants to get gacked on MDPV at least tell them what they are in for, rapid heart beat, horrible come down, ungodly fiendish want to redose.
