LC with or without GE holes

Read the tek on LC with light corn syrup and self healing knock up hole. But it didn't mention anything about a GE hole. Are the GE holes not necessary for an LC.

nah.. GE is essential for colonization.. so yeah.. you need one.. just keep the polyfil or tyvek dry..

i use a bandaid to cover the drill/inoculate hole. works well. just replace it then after each time you use the lc.

I made a self healing hole with silicone but I wasn't thinking about GE and the Tek didn't mention it so I wasn't sure if I needed one or not using the corn syrup? Guess I'll add one tomorrow.

it doesnt really matter what the medium is.. the mycelium needs to have gas exchange, but it also thrives with a very high PPM ratio of CO2.. a lil 1/4 inch hole should do just fine for you

Just a little tip for you regarding making GE holes for LC jars.
I use quart jars for my LCs (specifically grain LCs). I place the self-healing injection port (RTV silicone) on one side of the lid and the tyvek hole on the opposite side of the lid. This will enable you to suck up your LC with a syringe without making your tyvek (polyfill) wet, which increases risk for contaminants. All you do is tip the jar down toward the self-healing injection port and it keeps your polyfill/tyvek from getting wet.
Nothing extra or fancy. Just a little tip when you make your lids.
This LC lid design differs from my regular grain quart jars. I usually put the self-healing injection port in the middle of my grain jars to make spraying the LC evenly over the rye easier.

Thanks M11. I'm using 1/2 pints for this round, & have a hole in the center, But when I grow up to qrts I'll keep that in mind.
Never seen the video.

instead of using tyvek or polyfill to cover the drilled hole in the lid of the liquid culture, i place a bandaid across the lid, covering the hole(s). this allows gas exchange and keeps contaminants out. understand?

but a bandaid isnt exactly a good filter for contams.. it wouldnt completely seal the hole.. unless you were using the circular type bandaids..

I have used band-aids successfully as well. I was told by many it wouldn't work.

I do feel way cooler using tyvek though.
