is this ergot?

Growing on grass of some sort. This area was the only place where I saw stalks like this. Some have cobwebish growth and leaves a powdered behind on my hands when handled. Its probably not, just thought I'd verify.

If it is, are you sure it's safe to be handling that with your bare hands? It could be. I really don't know, but you probably should since you're fucking with it. Ergotism is pretty brutal.

If it is, I'd like to find out for sure. Pardon the pics as I am in the field posting thru my phone. I may return with a high definition camera if need b. Like I said, after an initial hike, this is the only area where I can find stocks that look like this. They r the most suspicious suspects I've seen yet, but can't say for sure

This thread was moved from The Ethnobotanical Garden.
Reason: I'm thinking you'll get better responses in the Mushroom Hunting forum.

Doesn't look like ergot to me. I've come across ergot a couple of times and it's impossible to powderize it between your fingers when it's growing on a grain, as it's rock hard. Also, are the kernels you suspect to be ergot infested shiny? because the actual fungus that grows on the grains isn't, it has a very dull black surface. I am not going to make a final statement unless I've seen good pictures, because, as you surely know, those are too poor to really tell for sure what you have there.

in short, agreeing with german, ergot is like hard rat turds growing from the germ.
ergot is only good for lsd synthesizing, and you got to be pretty much be a chemist for that.

I wasnt sure if ergot was even needed at this stage of the game...I just figured that's where it was discovered and they could now synthesize it w/o the fungus. I just eat the blotter and dont think about it, I suppose....

not needed, but the only good use for ergot,
personally, i live in the rural retirement woods(BFE,a.k.a.boonies), where the only drug that passes through is pot, i saw lsd once in my area, srhrooms only wild, and really besides pot, pills are it, n i dont eat pills. its drove me to live elsewhere for parts of my life so if i were to ever come across lsd i think i would like it to derive from something natural like ergot, (there is probably a good reason they dont use it anymore...)

Yes. Make cultures and then produce large amounts of it. Then all you need to find is a chemistry major that will make the LSD for you. Joking aside, large amounts of ergot can potentially be worth a LOT of money. But from single grain to industrial amounts it's quite a long way.

That's not true, actually. Lysergic acid and its derivatives are used in a wide variety of pharmacological products. Plus it should be mentioned that ergot contains about ten times as much Lysergic acid as HBWR and other sources of LSA.
