Women eating like birds and training for marathons!!

I am seeing this girl. She does not eat! She avoids 95% of carbs and for the most part she eats as little as she can!
I dont want to tell her she is wrong, but I feel she is really wrong!!! Marathon runners are supposed to thrive off carbohydrates.
How can she eat so little and then run 9 miles? She said she feels great too. How is this possible?
If I didnt eat and tried to run 9 miles I would be raging hungry and probably run down any small animals I saw to eat raw.
Whats going on here?

She has probably slowed her metabolism significantly by starving herself and is in a constant state of ketosis. As long as she isn't going into ketoacidosis, she should be fine. Some people feel a lot better on it, especially if they have carb allergies. Whenever I go on a cyclical ketogenic diet and I'm in ketosis, my BO smells like Hawaiian punch. It's awesome. When I eat carbs, my BO kills small animals.
It's also crazy how much it seems like mood affects ketosis through increased or decreased brain metabolism. Maybe it's all in my imagination though.

Well, a seasoned runner like herself doesn't need as many calories as you do. For one, her body uses calories more efficiently than we do. (During exercise our body actually has more energy available than we actually need - Someone with a strong cardiovascular system can minimize that)
Next, she weighs a shit ton less. So her running 9 miles is going to be infinitely easier than you (assuming you weigh at least 40lbs+ more)
(To prove my point, get a backpack, put 40lbs in it, and start running and see how much more work you have to do with that extra weight holding you down - which means your body is making even MORE extra energy)
If she feels healthy, she probably is healthy. Is she underweight? If her weight is fine, then I doubt there is a problem...

I HIGHLY doubt a RUNNER is going on a ketosis diet... the only good thing about being on a ketogenic diet is to preserve muscle mass and I doubt she cares too much about that as a runner. She wouldn't be able to run 9 miles if she was starving herself either.. so, there is no way this is true.

She is actually overweight.
I also thought she had slowed her metabolism and therefore became overweight.
The thing is that she wants to lose weight.
So its kinda hard to tell her. lol.

I think she'd probably lower her body fat % quicker if she started eating carbs and kept her daily caloric deficit around 100-200 calories using the standard calorie intake calculators. This will allow her metabolism to increase so that's she's burning far more calories while resting. Starvation diets and long cardio sessions are bad ways to lower your body fat %. That was my experience at least. I weighted 250 at 12 years old. You should get her to lift with you and try HIIT for cardio.

Get her to check this site out. It recommends eating high fat and protein diet (no grains), but not over-doing the cardio.
If she wants to loose weight, she should lift weights and do sprints/HIIT and continue with low carbs. She has to be eating lots of fat though, high protein diets are bad.
Chronic cardio can make people keeps fat (because the body needs fat stores to run that 9 miles). Instead, if you do workouts solely using glycogen, then your body has no reason to store fat.
You increase your metabolism greatly with the high intensity, which burns fat through the day. Furthermore, you are sending your body the message fat is useless and there is no reason to keep stores based on your energy usage. Staying away from refined carbs keeps insulin down and stops excess fat accumulation.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security." Albert Einstein

Well she is not running full stride like an olympian. She jogs the 9 miles. Its a decent pace that she keeps.

I can't even jog 9 miles (5mph), and I assume if she is a marathon runner she isn't going like a turtle. I get light headed at about 7 1/2 miles...
I dunno man... shes burning at least 1000 calories every time she runs, I can't imagine why she would even be overweight

I think what somone said before is the right answer. She is not eating enough so her body is clinging on and saving anything it can including fat stores.
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Nutrition-Dieting-939/Running-eating-well-losing.htm
Actually she is a half marathon runner. But still.
It has to be that her metabolism has slowed to a near hault.

How exactly do you gain weight on a paleo diet though?
I always saw carbohydrates as the key to weight gain and muscle mass. Especially for ectomorphs also known as hardgainers or skinny people.

I'm sorry your original post didn't say anything about gaining weight? I can't remember why I said Paleo and didn't explain anything, unless I was pressed for time, I'm not sure. Anyway if she's gaining fat and not muscle mass then she is getting fat from something she is eating. If she is eating only very little then what does she eat? She should not be gaining fat is she's training and eating very little. If she wants to speed up her metabolism a high protein diet like the Paleo diet is an excellent and healthy diet that provides all the nutrients that she would need for her body, as well as providing the protein that will help her muscles and she can supplement it with some "carbs" if she feels necessary, kind of like the Paleo diet for Athletes describes.
I just don't particularly understand this post I guess, she eats very little, but trains for marathons, but is fat or is getting fat but it isn't caused by her gaining muscle mass? I mean, if she is already fat she will be losing. If she's a smaller woman she won't need to eat a ton.

Her body is making fat stores to support her long runs. Sprints and intense exercise would be better for her.

> Well, a seasoned runner like herself doesn't need as many calories as you do.
When I am training, I easily burn through 1000 to 2000 extra calories a day, depending upon how many miles I put in. (I burn around 120 calories per mile when running.) I have to eat a ton of extra food to maintain my weight.
> Her body is making fat stores to support her long runs. Sprints and intense exercise would be better for her.
Hardly. If she is training for marathons, then semi-long runs (10k to 20k) are going to be majority of her training. She should only be doing tempo runs or intervals (sprints) once (or maybe twice) a week and one extra long run (30k-ish) once a week.

How is the title misleading? A bird does not eat like a human. If a bird ate what I did everyday it would be dead. I know you mean to compare them to a human only scaled down. Thats not what I was refering to.
I dont know how overweight she is because I am not going to ask her. I think she is just a rare breed. I dont know how she is so outgoing. She not only trains for a marathon but she spins, does hot yoga, and lifts weights every once in a while. Crazy.
