How to tell if jars are stalling?
    #14194558 - 03/27/11 08:56 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I'm worried my jars are stalling or just growing very slowly..  I took this cake out and watered it because I thought it was done and here is what it looks like about a week or two later.

How do I know when to start over?

Do you have air exchange in this jar? Giving it fresh air might help. Also you could flip the jar upside down so that the cake falls off the bottom of the far. This could disturb the dry verm barrier and help some contamination get through, which isn't quite common, but it's still better than not doing anything at all.It looks like the bottom of your jar is too packed with substrate, that's why it won't colonize. If nothing helps then you can go ahead and cut the uncolonized part out with a sterile knife.

Okay I flipped them over maybe I should take the microsomes tape off for more air exchange. I think I made my Verm layer too big

Slightly thicker verm layer is ok. Judging by the picture I'd say that your verm layer is fine.

Since you flipped the jar you have to elevate it a little so the air can get through the holes in the lid. If by microsomes tape you mean micropore tape then I'd suggest taking it off. Nevertheless, keeping the tape on shouldn't do any harm.

That would make sense I forgot elevate them so maybe the gas exchange is stalling them. And yea I hate iPhones spell correct

That would be the lack of gas exchange that's causing your cakes to stall due to the vent holes being restricted while you had your cakes flipped and not elevated.

Colonizing mushroom mycelium requires filtered gas exchange through out the entire colonizing period or it'll become stalled.
