Off their heads
DRUG dealers carrying lethal amounts of heroin may be spared jail under new guidelines.
A panel of top judges wants leniency for "small-time" dealers with less than 50g of the drug.
The barmy new sentencing plans mean criminals could carry enough heroin to supply up to 20 junkies - knowing they will not be jailed if caught.
The Sentencing Council wants courts to concentrate on jailing drug producers and big dealers, giving smaller pushers lesser punishments such as community orders.
But it says a small-time dealer is someone who has up to 49.9g of highly-addictive heroin or cocaine - although as little as 5g can kill.
Under guidelines released yesterday, low-level peddling also includes less than 100 ecstasy pills, 250g of amphetamine, 50 doses of LSD, 1kg of cannabis or 50g of the tranquiliser ketamine.
The Council also wants to lay off "introducers" - vile parasites who prey on children by selling cheap drugs to get them hooked.
Tragic Rachel Whitear, 21, whose dead body was pictured in a graphic anti-drugs campaign, became hooked on heroin after she was introduced to the drug by a boyfriend while still at school.
Drug "mules" who smuggle narcotics into Britain would also be treated more leniently if they were "naive".
The proposed guidelines will now undergo a public consultation process - as The Sun demands an end to soft justice.
Tory MP Philip Davies said the judges, lawyers, academics and ex-police officers who make up the independent Sentencing Council were out of touch with the views of ordinary people.
He added: "By giving a slap on the wrist, we're basically telling these people to carry on dealing."
The council, chaired by Lord Justice Leveson, was criticised last week for plans to send 4,000 fewer thugs to prison for assault. Its drug guidelines say judges should show leniency to a dealer who is a junkie or immature. The Council also wants stiffer penalties and more jail terms for drug producers or growers.
It said: "All offenders will have sentences increased where harm to the community is shown to occur."
The Justice Ministry said it was considering its response to the proposals, adding: "We are committed to tackling the drug trade."

God, I hate the childish bullshit words they use in stories like this.
Carrying lethal amounts of heroin? What is this...? What does that have to do with anything?
NEWSFLASH: Man stores lethal amount of alcohol in house!
Clearly, he was intending to drink it all at once.
Oh and LOL @ people in general who think morphine is a harmful substance. Sometimes it seems like 80+ years isn't enough time for important information to disseminate. I say we give it another 50.
