failing out of college
    #14201878 - 03/29/11 01:53 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

due to some bad depression and anxiety issues i did horrible last semester and as a result got put on academic probation. i think i'm doing pretty good in all my classes except one which I'm currently failing due to some confidence issues and not thinking i could do good in it.

if i fail this class i'm almost positive all be kicked out of college. this sucks not only because i'd be getting kicked out of the college that i want to be at more than any other one in my first year and the lost opportunity, but it's far from home and parents have spent quite a bit on plane tickets and their time in support. most of all this first year of college has cost about 10,000 in loans.

i have had depression for a few years, but now it's the worst it has ever been and even have had suicidal thoughts sometimes. i'm not going to do anything, so no need to worry, but i fear if i get kicked out it will be another shitty year and not sure if i could take it and considering reaction of my parents if the worst does happen.

so basically i'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else and any advice?

would i even be able to get financial aid to go to like a community college or something?

thanks for reading

Talk to your academic advisor. They can tell you who to talk to. I had a few roommates that did this and they were able to drop their failing class late in the semester without it affecting their GPA.

One guy was taking the class for the 3rd time (which they normally do not let you drop) and I was his TA, but when you study for 3 hours per month for chemistry, you fucked yourself.

I knew a girl in grad school that was doing bad (she had a trophy husband and was only there "until she had children") and her advisor let her drop all but one class so that she would not flunk out, and still be in academic good standing.

Ombudsman may help. Check around and find someone. People flunking out looks bad on them as well as you and the money you bring them, they will usually try to bend the rules a little, but you HAVE TO ASK for help.

i had two f's and an incomplete last semester and if you don't pass a certain percentage of classes i will lose financial aid, so i'm not sure that i can. but all definitely see about it.

I was able to get grants or financial aid even after I failed a semester. Maybe not directly after, but eventually you can earn them back. You can always resort to bank loans. I had to do that.

Dont beat yourself up too much. College is a high anxiety environment. Its natural to feel stressed as fuck. I barely made it through college because of anxiety problems. If you want it bad enough you will get it.

One time I was put on probation for failing an entire semester because I smoked pot, drank too much, and never went to class. I thought my college career was over. I didnt go back the next semester and I started working at Wendy's, lived in a shitty apartment with a shitty roomate and it sucked ass. It really did me good though. I realized I wanted to graduate and avoid Wendy's. I was blessed with a second chance and I graduated.

You can do it. Dont give up. Graduate!!:tongue::wink::smile:

You got it!

Most kids go to school on a bunch of loans in their parents name and don't give a shit about how they do.  They end up dropping out and wasting other people's time and money due to incompetence or a lack of doing what they need to.  The only real motivation i've found to work is paying for the classes out of your own pocket.
XUL's got it right.
I bet you'll have worse depression and anxiety problems if you end up trying to live off of minimum wage. Undergrad is a breeze in comparison.

To me, it sounds like you're being fucking lazy. Call me harsh, but I work my ass off in college and I'm making A's. I don't think about doing my work, I just do it. You probably beat around the bush all day. Confidence issues? What the hell does that even mean for school? It's all technicality besides writing papers, and if that is the problem, get your teacher to critique you.

Call me a jackass but go to the library, hit the books, do what you gotta do, and pass. Stop making posts about not being able to do shit, and just do it.

I just spent the past 5 1/2 hours starting a paper thats due in a few weeks and I'm a lazy fucker most of the time. If I can do it, you can do it.

Yep. I already knew he wasn't paying on his dime from the title.

I've never met a person (personally) who failed out when they paid with their own cash. My friend took out a loan cuz his family is poor and he almost has a perfect 100 in all his classes...you have motivation when you're paying for it, and you have a lot to lose if you fail out

Its a lot easier to say fuck it when it isn't your money to lose.

I find it interesting that he's complaining about failing school here on the shroomery of all places.
A lot of people including me get on this site to try and figure out how to pay for classes.

well i will be the one who pays the loans when i get out.

to me that makes it harder because then saying fuck it doesn't just affect you but the other person.

and i don't think you were being to harsh it's the truth except for the lazy part, that's probably only partly true. i guess i just need to stop over thinking shit.

i meant confidence issues like it's a hard class. i have always been too worried about grades and how good i'll do and have had all sorts of anxiety issues.

and now the worry of getting kicked out makes it even harder to get motivated.

just get loans like the pell grant, stafford loans, ect.

I think you have it wrong, it DOES affect you, infact, more than you realize apparently. By you failing out and wasting their money, trust is gone. They aren't gonna shell out another $10,000 for you just to fail out. What will you do then without an education? Minimum wage job? Oil field? Military? You think they are gonna let you waltz right back home with your tail tucked in and live with them after that? Maybe so.... but is that right?

You almost being kicked out should be THE motivator to get you going. If you don't pass, you're going to lose a lot more than grade man, you're going to lose trust, an opportunity to get a degree and a great job, and most importantly, you sold yourself short of what could of been the best thing to ever happen to you.

If that isn't reason enough...maybe you should just quit now while you're behind and go work at McDonalds... I hear they are hiring this time of year

i think you miss understood me. i meant if someone else was paying for it i won't be the only one affected. of course i know it affects me, otherwise i wouldn't be so scared.

i realize that, but it's just thought of it being possible brings too much fear that it holds me back on top of the fact there's only a month of school left. and i haven't been attending much of that class so i'm not sure how much work all be able to make up.

ahhhhhh fuck.

You aren't even trying then

You see what I'm saying. That is sheer lazyness... you just skip class.

Well for starters, email your professor and explain you haven't been to class (make up bullshit if it makes you feel better) and ask if you could have a time with him to discuss making up work or if he even has a make up policy or if its a 0, it varies by the teacher, just ask.

Next, go to class. Do your work and do it well. Make A's, and get the passing grade. It really isn't that hard if you put some real effort into it.

Stop being a bitch, I have pretty bad social issues myself. I still get my shit done because to be honest the majority of school work is anti-social which should be right up your alley.

My confidence is shit, every time I take a test I almost puke from the room spinning because im panicking that I'm gonna get a zero. I always end up getting 90+ percent. You can't use confidence issues as an excuse because you don't need any to learn.

If it was my families money on the line I would be getting damn near 100% in everything. Be fucking lucky you have family that can shell out money to aid you.

Anon #1, I have a similar situation.  Did poorly in school, got depressed.  Did worse in school, got more depressed.  Eventually I struggled with anxiety and fear every day.  I also had suicidal thoughts, and like you I was never close to acting on them - but they were there.

I eventually acknowledged that I could not cope on my own, and sought out external resources.  I started therapy with a counselor, and see a nurse practitioner who prescribes me anti-depressants.  Im still very much in recovery and therapy, and it helps.  I am now doing slightly better, and am getting better as time goes on (albeit slowly).

Dont discount the efficacy of therapy and anti-depressants, I think you should seek each of these out.

Good luck!

College is one big ego crush from the first sidewalk square.  Confidence and an ego are THE biggest boon a student can have and they are both often just genetic predisposition.  Being anxious and shy makes it so hard just to walk into a classroom that you should get half credit just for attendance.
