Timetable questions

The small amphibian that lives across the hall came to me with a problem the other day. He will be moving to a new location around the 2nd week of May or so and doesn't know whether he should innoculate 2-3 weeks before making the move so that colonization will be taking place when the move occurs, or whether he should wait to arrive at the new location before starting up. Basically, he needs to know whether bringing colonizing jars on a 4 hour car trip in a shoebox or something comparable will be worth the many weeks of waiting it will save him later. Anyone have any advice that I can relay to him?

If he really can't wait (amphibians have notoriously short life spans) tell him to transport the jars in an insulated cooler with one of those freezer pack things that has been wrapped in a towel. The freezer pack should not come into contact with the jars.

I assume the ice pack would be to keep the temp below a level that could kill the mycelium...but do you really think this is 100% necessary, as the amphibian may be traveling with parties that he may wish to conceal the jars from?

Best case scenario . . . everything works out just fine. My friend says this is about 90% likely to happen. Worst case scenario . . . the mycelium dies on the trip, and you make up new jars when you get to where you're going. Wait a minute, wouldn't you be doing that anyway if you decided to wait until after the move? My friend would definitely start them now, he doesn't see any reason (besides a possible loss of a little time, substrate, and spore solution) not to. Edit -- Whatever you decide, good luck!!

Not 100% necessary, but shit happens and my friend likes to play it safe. Cold mycelium goes to sleep. Hot mycelium dies.

Do you really want to make that long of a drive worrying about those being in there? I would wait just in case, cause you would hate to be pulled over by a cop who actually would know what they are.

i dont think that is very likely, most cops woudl ahve no idea what it is, and i mean, it sounds like jars arent the only think he would be moving, u really think a cop would go through all his stuff, find some canning jars with partially colonized BRF, and bust him?
i'd do it now... u can always try again if it fails.

I am just a little paranoid. I doubt that a cop, if a cop even pulls him over, would know what they are, but just in that one in a million chance, that scares the sh*t out of me. If your amphibian friend is not scared about being pulled over, then I would say to go right ahead. He could have beautiful mushies with a few weeks of moving in.
