A Quick Syrian Rue Growers Guide
    #14198259 - 03/28/11 02:41 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Now, I know there have been a good number of these guides, but I think I have a couple of important points in this one. Including how the rue has been grown in 60%+ RH and still is making good progress.

Also First post ever!

A quick guide on growing Syrian Rue from seed.

I've managed to grow 4 successful plants (With 3 sets of leaves) from seed so far, here is the method I used. (Syrian Rue germinates at a medium speed, but catches mold extremely fast, so use a sterile germination route)

First I germinated the seeds by placing them between two damp sheets of tissue paper placed into a plastic bag. This took about a week for 15% of them to germinate, they had little tails coming out of the seeds. Next I planted these into a simple 50/50 mix of potting soil and sand. The trick with this stage is knowing only the strongest sprouts will survive this part, due to the need to let the soil dry. Water only when the topsoil is dry to the touch. If you baby the seedlings and water them too often, mold/fungus WILL set in, and the contaminated parts need to be removed or destroyed

Now keep in mind, this was done indoors, at 60% RH and 80ยบ F.
They may not like humidity, but will tolerate it as long as they aren't drowned. I needed to help out a couple of the seedlings out of the shell, and did so by gently pinching the seed and wiggling every day until it slid off. You are in the clear when you see them putting out their second set of "Leaves" which look like adorable scraggly little arms reaching towards the light.

Another important factor: When they are young they have extremely weak rootsystems and poor stem strength, so they fall over a lot. This doesn't mean they are dead/dying, just that they lost balance. I would prop them back up with soil or bury them a little bit deeper. 2 of the four I have right now were propped up at some point actually.

A final point, plant 50-100 seeds and expect to get 10 of them to germinate, of those expect 2-3 to survive to the second leaf stage.

Syrian rue isn't hard to grow, it just needs to be monitored very carefully when it comes to watering.

Disclaimer: I'm not pretending to know anything important about botany, because to be honest I'm an amateur at best. I just use common sense, love, and what limited knowledge I have.

I got at least 25% with scarification of the seeds prior to germination. I mechanically scarified them with a sharp knife, but I see no reason why chemical scarification couldn't work just as well.
