Is technological advancement worth it?(Transhumanism)
    #14200207 - 03/28/11 08:47 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

In order to map out the human brain and all other parts of the body I would assume you would have to do it on a live subject.  Are all the animal and human experimentations worth it?

Oh yeah. I can't think of a better way to engineer the utopian hive mind than by basing it upon the neural architecture of sex offenders.

It's not a fantasy. Technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate. I fully believe that we will experience neural interfaces with computers within our lifetimes.

Yesterday's transhumanism is today's humanity.

To me, the real question is: How do we get it right?

Terrible, poopy interfaces that I wont be having inside my skull.

(flips channel to scifi)

But imagine five or six generations of development- you end up with a dude with a little ARM processor implanted at the base of his spine doing calculus for his brain or just downloading porn off the wifi so it can beam it directly into his REM cycle!

Note: human/brain interface may not be so close. Talk to computer scientists and biologists and you'll find that for all the wonder we've created, we're nowhere near ghost in the shell. More likely you'll be seeing the blind get their sight back (with quality this time), other sensory restorations or improvements, possibly new artifical sensory augmentations (think how useful built-in infa-red would be for soldiers) and things like lab-grown organs, prosthesis that are smart and tie into the nerve system to respond more appropriately, and more and more human/computer social interfacing with AI applied in hundreds of new and interesting ways.

BTW, we already have AI out the wazoo. It's:

*Peekin' to see if you're copying $20s in Photoshop
*Checking your balances for wire transfers outside your Standard Deviation
*Deciding what's popular, deciding what you'll like
*Watching you flail your arms at the TV (and deciding where your arms are)
*Brute forcing your chess masters
*Translatin' your slanguages
*Picking your faces and voices out of crowds

Some quotes:

"Every time we figure out a piece of it, it stops being magical; we say, Oh, that's just a computation."
- Rodney Brooks

"As soon as someone gets a computer to do it, people say: 'That's not what we meant by intelligence.' People subconsciously are trying to preserve for themselves some special role in the universe."
- Michael Kearns

The experimentation for actual bio-modification will be done ultimately on the uber-wealthy who feel the need to see the world from a Bee's perspective, hear people 200 yards away on command, or just make their dick do neat tricks.

Also the people who are afflicted with terrible diseases/malfunctions.

It's kinda cool how no government can effectively police the internet in it's exponentially exploding vastness. It's like a melting pot of humanity good bad and ugly. Think about how much this website subverts the United States alone with it's tiny little island of information.

This kind of thinking is so senseless. When we are born completely functional why modify it? I'm all for artificial limbs and such, for amputees, but other than that I think people are caught up in some fantasy of a future where they are half machine half human.
How can we surpass the limits that are set in our genes? We are destroying this world for future generations and excusing it by saying technology is gonna fix it all. Drink your liver to death? Get a new lab grown one? Just look at what E-waste is doing to China, there are villages where the water is so polluted from that shit they have to truck water in. Women sit over coal fires burning shit to recover rare metals for VERY meager wages. When we need a certain amount of rare earth metals to make electronics and mining those metals has a tremendous human and environmental cost/toll, we can't escape reality.
What when we run out of those elements will we have finally perfected space travel, then will we become aliens roaming the universe and secretly invading other worlds for their precious metals?
I don't think so. And we're pretty far from an "organic" computer.
We don't need chips at the base of our spine, because our spines are miracles. When humans already do calculus why do we need to do it on chips implanted? I know nature is always changing and morphing, but if we keep pushing it it not gonna be pretty like it is in those anime movies. Its gonna be an ugly fucking world. That's all I have to say.
