charging makes my laptop run slow?

Okay, so sometimes i accidently unplug the charger on my laptop, but as soon as i plug it back in, my computer starts to lag. It continues even at 100% charge. The only remedy is to restart my computer with the cord already plugged in. I have no idea why it would do this. Normally i can play games like starcraft 2 and i have no speed issues, but when it is like this it can take 30-45 seconds just to open up google chrome. I have a Dell inspiron 1520 running windows vista. I've had this problem for a long time (its a 3.5 year old laptop), but i dont think ive always had it. Any ideas would be appreciated!

first guess is an operating system problem, report back after you've done a fresh install of windows 7...

Haha, yeah i know i really should make the switch, but im too lazy and cheap to do it now. even though vista is shitty, it works and i would like to hold out until chrome gets its os up running and compatible with enough of the market. Besides, ive always had vista and i cant remember having this problem but for 9 months or so, im just finally getting around to asking about it.

Sounds like a power saving scheme that goes wrong. Some schemes involve CPU throttling, which lets the CPU run at a lower speed to save on power. You can check the power saving settings through the control panel; maybe messing with those will help solve the issue. If it doesn't, boot the system with a Linux cd/dvd and see if the problem persists. If it does, it's probably firmware related, but most likely, you'll find that Linux doesn't suffer from this problem, and then you know for sure it's software related.

This definitely occurred to me as well, it may work out for you to choose the high performance power plan, this sets the minimum processor state to 100%, though would likely eat through your battery life faster when off the cord. If the issue carried through in linux, I guess you could test out if disabling speedstepping settings in bios would help..

Agreed... check your Power Settings in Windows. Set to high performance mode, then go into the advanced options and set all the "Turn Hard disks off" and "Turn monitor off" etc etc... all to "Never". Try setting the same settings for when on battery and when plugged in and see if that helps or just play with those. Also check in the BIOS for ACPI suspend Type and try setting that to S1+S3 or S3.. not sure if that will have an effect but try it
Also Vista sucks +1 Get 7

All good advice in the above...

Bleh... Microsoft sucks. Leave it to a marketing yoyo to find a way to drive a monopoly into the ground. Unless something drastic changes in the very near future, Microsoft is a thing of the past.

2 guesses, both are power setting related:
1) Power settings for "On Battery" are set to maximize battery life and not performance meaning throttling is in effect while on battery. Based on the description the change from plugged in to unplugged back to plugged in could be fast enough the laptop still considers itself on battery and throttles.
2) Some motherboard/chipset combos throttle the cpu to control temperature. Charging generates additional heat which could be triggering throttling until the charging is complete.
