Grinding necessary for making tea?

I've made tea out of crumbled bits and out of powder and haven't noticed any difference in potency but I wanted to ask the General Public to weigh in on whether they felt that grinding the dried bits to a powder was beneficial for extracting the goodstuff(tm) into the water. I'd rather not grind if I can avoid it as straining out the oatmeal muck is pretty nauseating.
Anyone?

Grinding is all I have done. Coffee grinders are so cheap. I then eat the "oatmeal". Gives me a little indigestion but the hope is that it prolongs the trip as the residual is absorbed in digestive tract.

My problem is that I have a freakishly strong tolerance to this stuff and need 6 grams for a mild buzz... eating that much hydrated sludge fires up the gag reflex. I've thought about making my own tea bags but haven't gotten around to it yet.

You'll have more surface area, so you'll have a more efficient crude extraction the more you grind it. Just buy some stash tea, take out the staple, dump out the tea, add your herbs/mush, and re-staple.
My tolerance is about the same. I ate fresh last night, and added a little soda in my mouth. It kinda fizzed up around the mushrooms, so I couldn't taste it even while chewing. But the fizzyness only lasts for a few seconds.
Gell caps are another option if you don't like the taste. Or, I've also wrapped ground up herbs in a lettuce leaf, but that's slower and can backfire.

+1 for just adding unchopped mushrooms to a pan of boiling water and simmering for 15-20 mins

I might try this and add instant hot chocolate to the water...

Yes... more surface area = more efficient extraction.
Plus, you don't need to go through all that trouble to make shroom tea bags. Just get some coffee filters and fold them into a pouch, put the shrooms in and staple shut. Viola! Home made tea bag.

Make them separately, and then add them when you're ready to drink. I've noticed with teas/herbs that I can't get as much in the tea if something has already been brewed.

Go to target and buy a "skimmer" in the cookware dept. It's a flat to slightly convex screen and it's used to skim grease from the surface of liquids (broths or soups). It's a much finer screen than a normal sieve. Brew your ground hash in your favorite tea flavor and then pour it through this - removes all of the sludge.
BTW - I only eat two teaspoons of the sludge. 6 grams of it is way too much to eat.

An update... I tried the following method on Saturday and it worked really well to mask the taste and eliminated nearly all the nausea:
I threw 6 grams of dried fruits into a small saucepan with about 7oz of water and simmered it (with a lid) for about 20 minutes - took it off the stove and let it cool while I made up a small mug of hot chocolate (with water, not milk) - used a little less water than the chocolate normally calls for.
After about a half hour of cooling, I strained out the soggy shroom bits, mixed the two fiendish potions together and sucked it down. It was actually sort of pleasant and it did the trick. I felt little nausea, which was a big plus, and it wasn't an ordeal to force down a bunch of alien mush.

Would you say the effects were 6 grams worth?

I have a food processor. I take my fruits (generally about 6 grams worth at least, just like you OP) and toss em in. Then I get this drink at the local store (two of them to be exact) that is OJ/strawberry/banana. I pour in enough of one to fill my processor up till about halfway full of liquid.
Then I whirl it around, derpa derpa, get the pieces as small as possible, and then dump it out. Then, I take the rest of that one bottle, pour it into the processor cup and swish it around to get all the little bits that are left. So you're left with one drink in a glass and a bottle of unopened chaser.
The hardest part is the bits on top. If your processor is shitty like mine, it might leave some big pieces you've gotta get in your mouth and maybe chew up before you can even swallow them. It kinda sucks, but after you get over the top part the rest is just chug and chase. Its my homemade tech, last time I used it I used 7 grams and tripped bizzalls with a friend at my house.
Good luck!
