back pain and doctors
    #14197541 - 03/28/11 12:13 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

so i've had this pain in the neck/upper back/lower back (when laying down) for about 2 years.

i saw a doctor for it once, and they immediately wanted to put me on anxiety medication because they thought i was making everything up

can a doctor actually *do* anything about back problems besides give you the runaround? i'm too young for this shit. it's like something feels "out of place" about 3/4 up my spine but nothing fixes it, it's a constant pain everyday. anyone have any advice?

Don't get on opiates.  That's my advice.  That's also what most Dr's will try to give you because there isn't a lot you can do about back injuries short of risky surgery.

The best thing you can do is be healthy and strengthen your core muscles, maybe do yoga.  I'd ask a doctor first before I started anything like that though.

Opiates will help at first but it's not worth it in the long run.

how can you be sure it isnt psychosomatic?

I had some pretty intense chest pains when I was 14. and not after doing any exercise or drugs or anything (plus my heart was fine, i wasnt overweight, had a great resting heartrate etc). It just hurt and I was anxious so I thought I was gunna have a heart attack. doc gave me a xanax script, i took .5 and it went away.

I've been told by a ton of people chiropractors are cock sucking money pits.

Yeah I'm not interested in pain killers, I want the problem fixed but I doubt there's shit they can really do about it.

It doesn't help I'm of firm belief that 90% of doctors don't know shit.

That's the reason why so many people are on opiates, because there is not a lot you can do otherwise.

Chiropractors I don't really have an opinion about.  I've never been to one.  Some people say that they are great, some people say it's a scam.  I guess it depends on the person, worth a shot I guess.

because I know what anxiety is and I know what pain is.

i have both, but they're unrelated. it's like a dull throbbing pain, i don't get how anxiety could cause that. don't take anything for either.

you'd be surprised. Psychosomatic pain can feel VERY VERY real.

not sayin yours isnt real, just dont dismiss the possibility so fast.

Physiotherapy/yoga will ALMOST guaranteed help you.  Couldn't hurt to get in for a massage too - you might just have a ton of tension/huge knots in your back that have been building up for years now.

well it all started when i started having problem with my wisdom teeth.

i'm thinking that maybe the teeth are affecting the jaw joint which are in turn affecting the spine somehow

i'm getting them removed soon so hopefully that will clear it up

i don't know where to start with yoga, i've heard the same thing about yoga that I've heard about chiropractors

i've got massages but nothing. it really feels like it's "in the bone" if that makes any sense.

i'd love to try and just ask for an anxiety script to see if that would help but i can't be on them for work.

Whoever told you that is crazy I'd say.  Yoga is so good for you and it's not hard to see why.  Breathing, exercising, and stretching is good for you.

I don't see how that's like a chiropractor.

I have had the exact same pain in my back and neck for the past 3 or 4 years. It really sucks and I don't know how to deal with it. I abused Tylenol and Advil for a year or two and I still use excessive amounts of Tiger Balm. Doesn't cure it, but it helps make it bearable.

Try an osteopath.  I found them more helpful than the physiotherapists or chiropractors.

Although I have heard good chiropractors can be amazing, I haven't experienced that.

Also, Yoga and joint mobility drills (Intu flow) could help.

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

It helps a lot. I smoke everyday. I usually only smoke at night though, I have too much going on during the day. Nothing like a heavy indica to get that back and neck pain off your mind.

Doctors can do nothing but prescribe soma and hydrocodone. At least in my experience.
Also my wife just might go to the doctors today for just that, well at least some muscle relaxers. Going to a chiropractor when you lower back is locked up will do nothing.

A good chiropractor can make a difference. The problem is finding one that is really good.

Weird that it started with your wisdom teeth. Could be a nerve thing, sometimes something somewhere else will affect another part of your body. I would get those suckers out.

i know the feeling your talking about, thats a buldging/herniated disc, eventually it will slip and you will be fucked.  i mean it could be something else but most likely its a disc.  anyway stretching is the key, we are monkeys, were meant to climb n shit.  just be as active as you can without overdoing it, and be very very aware of what your lifting, how your lifting, and how much your lifting.  Its really hard to do this let alone talk someone into doing it but you have to basically stop thinking your strong.  Start thinking your weak.  Don't carry 4 bags of gorcerys at once, carry 1.  Do this with everything, worth on stretching everything 2-3 times a day, concentrate on stretching your spine as well reaching for the sky, leaning back, side to side etc.  then start working out, kind of become a body builder get in a routine, if you use chairs alot stand up every hour, get a watch set a timer.  Shit will get serious if you don't take care of it now.

Me to,if i smoke 1 gram of cannabis, indica,i dont have the pains in my back for 24 hours long.
Tried 3 different medicines like diazepam,diclofenac 50 mg,ibuprofens.
Nothing helped as good as cannabis.
I now have an medical license from my doctor for cannabis.
I can grow 5 plants without problems from the police.

The best medicine i know, also for the stress i have sometimes.
Pure nature herb, better then the chemical medicines.

back/spinal injuries are baaad.

most of the time, if you get surgery it wont help. and you run a risk of being paralyzed.

best things you can do to keep your back in good shape...dont be fat and exercise and strengthen your back muscles that support your spine. deadlifts, etc. take it easy though.
