Every Member of Seattle's Legislative Delegation Favors Legalizing Pot * 1

Every Member of Seattle's Legislative Delegation Goes on the Record in Favor of Legalizing Pot
slog.thestranger.com
FRI, MAR 25, 2011

Sweet democracy on a stick. As of yesterday evening, every member of Seattle legislative delegation to Olympia—all ten representatives and all five senators from the 34th, 36th, 37th, 43rd, and 46th Districts—had gone on the record to say that they support taxing, regulating, and legalizing marijuana. They join every elected official at City Hall (the mayor, the city attorney, and all nine members of the city council) and King County Executive Dow Constantine.

The final holdout was 46th District Representative David Frockt (who had been opposed to legalization a couple weeks ago). However, after a little goading and he heard testimonies from former US attorney John McKay and a former Whatcom County judge on a bill to tax and regulate pot, Frockt called last night to say that he had come around. He wouldn't commit to any specific bill, but said, "I am okay with legalization, I am okay with regulation, and I am fine with taxation." Good job, Rep. Frockt.

Has any other major US city shown such widespread support among its elected leaders for legalizing marijuana? I don't know. I just called an office at the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, where a staffer told me that uniform support for legalization "is not the case in San Francisco," adding that his employer, Sean R. Elsbernd, "would have some concerns."

This seems significant, whether we're the first city or not: It appears that the safest position politically these days—the most mainstream position a politician can take in Seattle—is to replace the War on Pot with a government takeover the entire industry. Quashing the politically toxic drug war is a winning platform. A decade ago, before Seattle voters had deprioritized enforcement of pot possession, most local lawmakers wouldn't touch this issue with a ten-foot bong. A poll last year found that most people in Washington support legalizing pot. Now all the lawmakers and the media are on board, too.

Not to get too speculative, but... is this what it looks like approximately 18 months before the first state in the US legalizes marijuana?

Well that was unexpected.

I think they might want to wait and legalize at the same time as California though. It would be too easy for the feds to stomp on Oregon and any legitimate store that popped up. It would be a different story with California and it's 37 million people.

Even though I live in up here, I feel Cali or Colorado will still be the first for full on legalization.  If, by some crazy twist Washington does legalize it first, it will just add to the reasons of why I love living here.

Aside from it being legal and no one having to worry, it will bring back the hemp industry...I hate having to buy imported, expensive hemp.

As much as I'd love for this to be true, I feel like it's not. When I searched this article I couldn't find any reputable news sources reporting this. And I could only find this exact article word for word spread around many different sites. The writing in the article seems written by someone with a bias towards legalization. I think it's a hoax article written with the hope to make people think this is what is happening, then passed around the internet as truth. I may be wrong but I'd like to see this story carried by a site that I can at least half trust. I think we are still far from any state legalizing and even if one state does it will still be federally illegal. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think I am.

This is no hoax. You can contact the representatives yourself and ask them their position.

well I'd like to see the story carried by a larger news site but if they do support legalization then I'm glad some people are coming around. It's just that I've read many articles that only let me down when I found out it was just some bullshit circulating the internet. I guess I've become very cynical about the efforts to end prohibition and the truthfulness of the internet when it comes to the subject. But even if the state of Washington legalizes marijuana it will still be federally illegal. That would probably cause all federal funding to be cut from the state causing many problems for the residents only to ultimately have the state outlaw it once again. Or even worse. I don't know, I'm just note hopeful. I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

If people want change then they need to contact their representatives and vote!

It's pretty simple really, we are a democracy, crying online about it won't do jack.
