ID Request - South California
    #14190226 - 03/27/11 02:16 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Because the stem fell off, I decided to draw a picture depicting the shape. The color is a dark/light brown (the stem that is):

I apologize ahead of time if these pictures are not top quality, please do what you can with them.

The mushroom has gills that are dark brown/black in color.

Every mushroom in the field looked very similar if not exact to this one, hence the reason I only picked one.

Spore print: Dark-purple/blackish/brownish.

General Area: South California, south of L.A. County. Growing in a grass field.

I know that its been said before that liberty caps don't grow in South California, but these from what I've researched look so close to them so I don't know, that's why I'm asking you guys.

This is my first ID Request so if there is any information you guys need please just ask. They are growing nearby so I can get more if need be. As for the camera situation, there is not much I can do about that.

They do not grow in California. They do not have a rusty brown spore print. They do not grow in this season... do you want me to go on?

What? Oh, come on!
Here, I fixed that for you:

You should refine your research method, because obviously you missed a few very important points. Don't ID mushrooms according to what you want them to be. Be honest to yourself. If it isn't a match it isn't a match.

Definitely not liberty caps.  I'd say what you've got there are Panaeolus of some sort.

Panaeolus doesn't have a brown spore print either. To be honest, the pics are blurry and kinda suck ass.

You will be doing yourself a big favor if you play around with spore printing all the mushrooms you can for practice interpreting spore coloration. there is no such thing as blackish-anything, and as you'll figure out, the difference between rusty/red browns, purple browns and black are significant. good lighting when looking at prints is pretty helpful, as it's easy to question what color  you're seeing many times.

Liberty caps do grow in California, but only north of Arcata, in fields near the coast.  They occur only in the fall and are not a common find.

OP's mushroom is not possible to ID without better pictures.

Yeah...
"North of Arcata" is almost Oregon, whereas "south of L.A. county" is almost Mexico. You might find cacti, but not libs.

How about Panaeolina foenisecii? Your blurry pic kind of resembles it and the spore print is a match.

Possible, but the print is usually a much darker brown. That's why many people mistake them for Panaeolus cinctulus, thinking that they are looking at a black print.
Anyways, given the quality of those images any ID would be mere guesswork.

I apologize for the low quality images. I have taken new ones to compensate. Thank you everyone for your advice, I'll be sure to use it in the future. I admit that with the spore print I may have wanted the colors to look like something they weren't, quite foolish of me.

I'm doing another spore print at the moment but with proper lighting I can make out that the color of the last print is Black, Jet-black. But I'll do another just in case and take a quality photo.

It's hard to tell with that picture, because the mushrooms are drying out. A good spore print would help out. Stems in the pic you just posted don't look right for Panaeolus cinctulus. Also, daylight, or lighting that's not so "warm" is better for taking pics. You're close :super:

Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

I have a feeling this is correct. After doing a good amount of my own searching I came to the conclusion it would be these or the two others they are sometimes mistaken for. Comparisons of photos lead to believe you are correct.

The spore print I attempted was too dry so I added a few drops of water next to the mushroom this time, it should be ready later tonight or tomorrow morning. I will try to take the picture in less "warm" lighting.
