Herbs in mah tea! knocking myself out with nature
    #14194960 - 03/27/11 11:59 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Exam tomorrow, need to sleep. Insomnia without weed, restless nights and racing thoughts. Need to abstain from the ganja in order to achieve clarity. Decided to bust out my inherited collection of herbs. Quickly researched some info on valerian and St. John's Wort. Mixed two tablespoons of St. John's Wort with a 1/2 tsp. of valerian into a cup and poured mildly boiling water over the mixture. Inserted bombilla, stirred, and let sit. Now I have a decent tasting tea I'm sipping on. I can feel the tiredness in my eyes from studying, but there is no way I can fall asleep before 2 or 3am. Weed makes sleep too easy. Plus I'm a niteowl hoot hoot.

Let's see if this works. Tomorrow I'll test out St. John's Wort on its own to gauge its effects. It'll be interesting to see if I sleep easily and dream merrily. I'm hoping for vivid dreams, which usually occur to some extent if I have been abstaining from the ol' Mary. I've read with the Wort that it needs to be taken over a period of weeks to get the anti-depressant effects. I just want to calm my mind and drift off into la-la-la land with merry elephants and jumping kangaroos.

Anyone have success with these herbs?

watch out with that st. john's wort, it can block uptake of your birth control pills.

also, not gonna help you sleep.

good thing I don't have a vagina

well it should ease my mind and tame those wild thoughts I have. Plus the valerian should make me mellow. I added another 1/2 tsp of valerian on my second cup, reusing all of the previous herbs. We'll see what happens. Hell it could even be a placebo, as long as it works. If I can find a viable solution to help me fall asleep for the next 3 days then I'm good. 3 days without weed is 3 restless nights of lackluster sleep. OH the humanity!

Valerian definitely increases the subjective duration of my dreams and turns them into literal action movies... I remember once after taking a few pills my dreams involved descending into a underground lair and defusing a nuclear bomb as part of a military team equipped with force-fields and antigravity jet-packs.

How exciting! Many adventures await, and I don't even have to leave my bed. How is that for cheap entertainment!

Isn't st. johns wort believed to possibly act as an SSRI?

It can act as a natural anti-depressant by allowing serotonin to "float around" a little longer, I believe. I guess it blocks serotonin's uptake for a bit. Is that the same way SSRIs work? Apparently it is a good alternative for mild depression.

Oh and that tea last night didn't do much for me, though I eventually fell asleep peacefully and woke up ready to ace my bio exam.

That's what SSRI stands for. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. I once had a friend become _really_ cranky due to regularly ingesting St. John's Wort. She was positively :kingcrankey:

Does valerian have any effect on the heart?

yeah, I was gonna give it a shot until I read that it's highly productive of free radicals in-vivo

then again, I'm a free radical fellow

You should give Melatonin a try, it's gotten me through many a dry spell and makes dreams vivid and memorable. It's also got anti-oxidant properties, and I always wake up feeling refreshed the next morning .

Apparently it is non-toxic. I wouldn't use it all of the time because I've read that after prolonged use, valerian actually causes insomnia, but your supposed to use it for a period of a few weeks to achieve the full effects.

I really want to but I've yet to purchase any. My friend said his dreams were too vivid after taking melatonin, so that excites me a bunch because I love to dream. I'll get around to it someday. It sounds like a great way to reset an off balance sleep cycle.
