Maybe someone can learn from my mistakes...

I mixed rye and water about 1 to 1 in some pint jars with pollyfill. Too much for the containers, after they were PC'd for an hour, the jars had a little less than a cm of space left at the top. I then took small chunks of a colonized and fruiting PF cake and put a piece in each jar. I then covered the jars with tin-foil ala keep sterility the e-z way. Big mistake methinks... They are going, but SO slowly it's not even funny, so I removed the tinfoil today and I think that is making a big difference already.
My conclusions: Mycelium needs space/air. Boil your rye before you put it in jars so you know how full it will be, or use less than ideal, kuz you can still shake a 1/4 of a jar.

How do you mean less than ideal? The ideal is so that there is 1/3rd of the jar free for shaking. Since the rye expands, you shouldn?t be using more than 1/3rd of the raw rye per volume of the jar.

What? 55lbs? Anyway, a good way to keep from over filling your jars due to grain expansion is to cook them before hand. Put them in some dH2O, bring to a boil and then reduce the heat and simmer for half an hour or so until some of the grain begins to break. Drain the water, and put the grains in the jars. Avoid the broken grains, they are bad for mycelia. The grain should not expand much after that, but they might if you didn't simmer them long enough.

I think I have heard others say this (but can't think of a reason why it would be so); why are broken grains bad for mycelia?

i've never heard someonesay exactly that. i've heard that the burst grains encourage tomentose mycelium whereas the relative thick/tough hulls encourage rhizomorphs. i've also heard that the starchy interiors are more likely to contaminate.

What makes the most sense to me is i read that teh grains have spores inside and if they are soaded they germinate which stops them from germinating when the conditions are right after u PC'd. hope u get that, just soak em for 24 hours.

Exploded grains release starch which makes the rest of the grain sticky and hard to shake. This is why we rinse the grain well after boiling.
