Newb + WBS + P cube. Cambo + Pretty Pics + few?s
    #14192324 - 03/27/11 01:34 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

My setup:
5 Quart jars. (3/8" GE hole + innoc hole. Wanted to experiment so 3 jars have tyvek + poly, 1 has tyvek only, 1 has poly only)

Each jar was noc'd with 1cc of MS P. cubensis "cambodian" on 3/18.  I only injected to one side. :frown:

Ambient RH in room is 25-35%
Temp is 72-78

Jars are sitting in closet on a shelf.

**I realize the photos show a lot of moisture on the glass.  I took the photos in the spare bedroom and the temp in the room was a good deal colder.  when they are in the closet I don't see the moisture at all

Jar 1: (the bastard jar)

This is the slow colonizing jar. It has whats shown on the picture and a good size ring on the bottom of the jar.  I haven't seen much activity in the last few days..  Any suggestions?

Jar 2:

This has the grown shown on the picture and maybe 1/3 of the bottom ring.  But the other 3 sides show nothing.  Time to shake?

Jar 3:

Pretty much same as Jar 2.

Jar 4:

same as Jar 2 & 3

Jar 5:

same as 2,3,4 but has a really nice fuzzy clump on the top.

And this is to thank anyone who put up with my newbness.

**Edit:  Realized I was being lazing on the name.  Should have followed normal name procedures.  Edit reflect proper name.  P. cubensis "cambodian"

Good luck!

The standard ideas for Paneolus:
Be careful shaking it (but you can), use a thin casing layer of 50/50, and an ~ 2" substrate.

Your grain jars are dry. When the millet gets dried out like that, it takes forever and a day for them to colonize. I have some that are exactly like that right now. It sucks.

Inject 10cc water into the stalled / slow one and shake it. I know it sounds like a lot, but when they get that dry, they can take it. Do 5 if it makes u too nervous.

The others look better / ready for shaking.

yup agree...I recently tried the 'no simmer/soak' WBS method, just to test, since I dont tell someone they dont know what they're talking about, until I try it..

anyway the jars were dryed out and the mycelium wouldn't even leave the agar to colonize the grains..

I shot up 20cc's of sterilized water in, and all 12 jars are about 60 percent colonized now...it works...

I started taking Mr. Mycoman's advice on grain prep and my spawn run got cut in half.

I want to kiss him on the lips.

@anonjon & biologys

Waiting on getting a sterile syringe.  Went too 3 pharmacys and all of them gave me grief about not be a current customer of theirs and can't sell insulin needles unless they become a customer.

I've ordered some syringes for my LC experiment. but those wont be in till later this week..  :frown:

My question is how can you tell it was too dry?  What do I look for to determine its too dry?

when I prep my grains and after i PC, you can see a bit of condensation on the inside of the jar and the grains just have a look to them, that I just reconize as being good moisture...

There's a couple places where the rhizo's are getting aggressive, but generally in this one you see the myc kinda fading out getting more wispy. It's the millet grains that get dry the worst. Sometimes you might notice the myc having a hard time eating it.

The closer I look tho, the better it looks to me. It's not that bad. I just started making mine stickier/wetter in general with big success.

Hey Anon,

"I just started making mine stickier/wetter in general with big success."

I have been struggling with this issue.  We are so well "trained" to
avoid moist grains that I may have settled on an approach that leaves
my grains just a tiny bit drier than I would like.

I have trusted, and will likely continue to trust, the soak to hydrate
the interior of my grains, but my intense drying out of the surface
before I load and PC them might leave them less able to support growth.

...just a thought.  What did you change about your procedure?

I use a massive stand-fan and toss the berries until they are dry on the surface.
I think that I will stop early for a few test jars next cycle.

Take care,

JD

Rye berries don't make any sense to me. Maenards has wbs for 8 dollars for a 40 pound bag. That's 20 cents a pound.

The cracked corn absorbs any excessive moisture and the starches really help things along.

Here's One inoculated with rye grass seed on the 27th (3 days)

This one on the 26th:

This bag inoculated by LC on the 23rd:

I just didn't get around to shaking it yet.

The epiphany came from that thread of Mr. Mycoman's a few months back where he was claiming he could make spawn in just a few days.

Interesting.  Thanks for sharing.

I get rye berries for 40 cents a pound which is pretty good.

I have WBS on hand, and have used it with success too.

Take care,

JD

Damn. I can find rye around here, but not for anything close to that price.
Would prolly be best ordering online or something but I dont usually do that.

Yes, it is the best price that I have found thus far.  RR suggested
the outfit: Azure Standard.

You team up with people in your area, so that only one of you is the
delivery point for all.  AS does a drop, and you all run over to grab
your stuff.

I felt a tad odd, getting 150 pounds of rye berries.  ;0)

...but I got them for $60.30 and that is to the penny.

Good luck,

JD

@pslyke  Thats what I told her.  But she said she felt naked without the belt.

@anonjon  So am I looking for more thick ropey mycl or more fuzzy mycl?  Or just really thick mycl that spreads really quickly.

finally got my syringes, and needles.  injected the bastard jar with 10cc of distilled water.  Gave it a good shake.  I'm too lazy to get the camera and tripod out, so i'll do pictures later this weekend.

Thick and fast spreading is what you want. When the millet is dry it looks thin, wispy, and slow.

hey op: everything looks good, dont be deterred; youre fine.

its in the nature of things that panaeolus myc is more wispy than cubensis.

just be patient and let it grow.

a lot of fearmongering here.

1. He has cubes not pans.
2. He said growth stopped in one of the jars and was looking for the possible cause.

which leads to 3. wut r u talking about?
