Homeless in California...
#14192282 - 03/27/11 01:25 PM (12 years, 10 months ago) |
|
|
so ive been thinking about moving to sac town for a little while now...
ive been living up in humboldt for the winter, but come may 1st i wont have a place to live anymore. plus i want to get out of humboldt anyway. to rainy and not enough sun for me.
i might have to be homeless for about a month when i arrive, but at least it will be mid spring...
so my question for anyone here from sac, is where would be the best area to be if i didnt have a place to stay right away?
ill be able to get up on my feet once im there, but ill be spending most of my money to get there so when i arrive, im not going to have enough right away for an apartment/room and ill have nowhere to stay for about a month.
any help at all would be greatly appreciated. thanks all.

I was checking out Sac town because I'm thinking of going to Davis.
The suburbs are supposedly nice. (Rocklin, Roseville, Folsom, etc. etc.)
And out of the central valley, Sac's supposedly the best, least tweakerish place.
I know nicechrisman lived there for a bit, but his opinion of the place is skewed IMO. He saw a lot of the ugly sides-- which I think you get in any sizable city.

Nothing to do, lots of weed shops.

something i should mention also is that i dont have a car, so im trying to find an area where there is plenty of public transit.
are there any places in Davis i could chill while i was homeless, until i got back up on my feet? like good parks where i wouldnt get kicked out for sleeping there or whatever...

Hm that I dont know. There are more bikes in davis than cars but its a small town so going outside of it will be difficult.
Sac is full of homeless, they camp along the river and such (not such a good idea now since their flooded)
Public Transit in Sac is horrendous, expensive and very limited, busses stop at 9pm

hmmm. well i appreciate the help and information so far...
basically this summer im going to be a "drifter" for awhile and need to find a decent place where i wont be cold at night if i have to sleep outside and somewhere where the cops wont hassle me. it wont be a permanent thing, but its gonna take me a month or two to get back on my feet.
i guess ill end up wherever life takes me either way. just trying to plan things out the best i can before hand, but either way ive gotta go. cant stay here.

I live in Citrus Heights and honestly I would much rather live in a town than Sacramento. I feel like there's more to do in the small towns than in Sac. Sacramento just seems like a antique city to me, not much to do in my opinion. Or maybe i'm all wrong becuase I don't go there much. Check out Citrus Heights, orangevale, or antelope.

Auburn ftw, oh wait no real public transit and 20-30 miles away from all the shows and shit.
But Auburn kicks ass if you have a car. So many rivers so many trails so many other things all out doors.

SACREMENTO SUCKS
DON"T GO THERE PLEASE
San Francisco, Greater Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, ANYWHERE in the bay area (for most part) are all better than sacremento.
It's hickville, hot as shit, state capital. You will hate it there.

@ this thread.
It's pretty rare that you find EVERYONE who ever lived in a place saying it's a crappy place.
I've never been to Sacramento, but it sounds like it really fucking sucks!

ive only been through there once on a road trip, but didnt stop. i thought it looked like a cool city, but after hearing everyone's opinions here, i will make sure to steer clear of that place.
glad i made this thread though because otherwise i would have had to find out the hard way.
definitely wont be going to sacramento.

i was homeless in Santa Cruz for a summer. in the winter its not even that bad, just have a sleeping bag and your set.
have you looked at www.wwoof.org? they can hook you up with organic farms that let you stay at their farm and feed you in exchange for 20 hours a week of work. it only costs about 20 bucks at most, i forget how much, but its not alot, and you get access to contact information for hundreds of farms all over the country, and of course california has the most organic farms of them all. i highly reccomend this over being homeless, as i've done both. while you are at the farm you can keep clean (shower, laundry) and this helps alot in getting hooked into the local community and you can land a job and get on your feet in no time. good luck

Yah I dunno why anyone would wanna live in Sac...thenagain I dont know why anyone would wanna live in SF or Oakland either.
SF is too expensive and overrun by violent agro homebums and gangs who hate travelers. I squatted in Golden Gate park once only to be woken up by cops who told me that there was a homicide where I was sleeping 2 days prior. I was threatened multiple times by agro homebums too.
Oakland is just sketchy crime central in general.

another good thing about the organic farm thing is you can leave the farm at any time and go to another one, because it sounds like you want to wander around a bit

I can't decide if I'd rather be homeless, broke, and nearly miserable, or have a household and become domesticated and stagnant.
Got to be a middle ground.

Tomorrow I am moving all the shit i've acquired in this world to Sacramento. funny that i see this thread now, less than 24 hours before i go there to live. i'm still hopeful, inspite of what i have read here.

Exactly my thoughts
Is california. You have the whole west coast to be homeless on. You could be sleeping on the beach in Santa Barbara or you could go to SF but your first choice is Sacrameno???
Take advantage of that coast. I mean that's the way I see it. Sleeping on a park bench in sacramento sounds terrible.

I second the notions of Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Venice/Santa Monica and Berkeley... in that order. I have either lived or spent extended amounts of time in or very near to all of these areas. They provide enough scenery for inspiration, are all coastal areas that won't freeze, and are all fairly tolerant of homeless populations. I've never lived in Sacramento but drive through often, I've also known an old college mate who lived there and it certainly wouldn't be near the top of my list.
