Classical music.
    #14192157 - 03/27/11 01:00 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

There is a classical radio station I listen to. To be honest I think I like classical music as much as rock and hardcore.

Classical as in symphonies. I love the soothing sound of traditional instruments. The thing is I dont know jack shit about composers. I feel like such an amateur when I listen to classical music.

Can somone suggest me some composers who have constructed some great symphonies? What do you like about the ones you suggested?

When it comes to symphonies you cannot pass up Gustav Mahler. Mahler perfected that which Beethoven started, i.e. the Romantic symphony. His thematic development is unmatched considering how huge his symphonies are (generally around an hour and a half.), thematic development being the coherence of the material, restatements and variations on themes, basically how the whole thing comes together and makes sense. I like his sixth symphony the best (see below), but the 5th and the rest actually are great.

As my namesake suggests, I cannot pass up an opportunity to espouse my main man, Arnold Schoenberg. It's not the most soothing music, but it is very interesting and out of this world:

There's a ton of classical music in dozens of styles and idioms. Try to find something you like and then find other composers associated with that style/period/movement. I have found the 19th and 20th century the richest in great classical music.
