Agar plate Vs Grain Spawn
    #14190740 - 03/27/11 06:11 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I totally understand that Grain spawn in many ways are way better, though both have their adv and disadv.

My point here which im trying to make is:

If i were to put 2 Agar plate cut into 6 pieces each and put in the plastic bag substrate, that does not contain nitrogen supplement like grains, will be it good enough?

I understand that with grains added, cooking time is longer. But, sepreately cooking sawdust together with CC and CS, one need not have to cook longer. Then later, one adds the agar plate which itself is a food for the mycelium.

Any thouights on that?

Its very much like in a log, u drill holes and push in the plug spawns.

If you're asking if agar is as good for inoculating sawdust as grains, the answer is no. It's not even close, and there's a good chance the mycelium will never jump off the agar into the sawdust.  Also, even if it did, colonization would be so slow, the substrate would likely contaminate before full colonization.

How about adding 4 Agar, cut into 24 pieces for a mid-sized block? And spreading it out.

Well, agar is cheaper for me here.

And itself, it is a source of supplement.

I think your best bet agar to wood would be supplementing your agar with wood so it has the wood digesting enzymes developed to make the leap, though I'm no expert.

Yes, that's what i do right from the beginning. When im doing the agar, i add in saw dust specks for it to get used to. Once colonised, i transfer directly to the blocks.

Also, i a do grain spawn as well.

And so, ive both, which i use it.

My concern was more about inoculation time taken, the later part on mushroom blooming, etc etc.
