melbourne S.E suburbs P.Sub ID request

Hi guys,
I am a complete noob and have only started reading these forums this year. Last year (July) i went out hunting in the SE suburbs of melbourne. I didnt know the first thing about shrooms or hunting except for what i'd seen in amsterdam 2 years prior.
I found some mushrooms and dismissed them but now, after reading this forum a whole lot - i think i mightve found some actives (P.Subs)
THe photos are really bad given that id never been on this forum and obviously hadn't read the 'how to take photos' thread but from what images i do have - are any of you able to more or less ID the following mushrooms:

Yes they look like subs to me, BUT wait for confirmation from one of the " trusted identifier " members. They know their mushrooms inside out and their word can be relied upon, mine can't !
Did you find them this season?

Those could be Psilocybe subaeruginosa, but the pictures make it hard to tell for sure.
Check for blue staining and also verify the spore print color.

Looks like subs to me, but the colouring of the shot is odd.

The lighting, gill size and size of the stems make it hard to tell... can you maybe take some photos during the day, or pick some and take clearer photos at home and a spore print? I agree with Alan, Spore print should be a purplish brown in colour

in regards to the first two manky looking ones in the foreground...if these were in fact subs, would they be safe to eat in that condition? or do you guys dry everything before eating them?

If you are planning on storing them for any time then you will need to dry them completely. If you are going to eat them straight away, it's really up to how much you mind eating a few bugs with your mushrooms.

Id am pretty certain they are P. Subs, there is almost no doubt.
In regards to eating the old ones in teh front, they are most likely still ok to eat but would be better dried, or made made into a tea then the mushroom matter strained out.
Now you know what your looking for - good luck this year!

Yeah, its a bit hard to see on the uploaded photos (camera phone and white LED flash) but there is very strong bluing on the stems, especially on the first 2 manky looking ones. Being completely unknowledgable at the time i didnt check the gills (and wouldnt have known what to look for anyway), but i will do in future.
I am looking forward to the 2011 season. I reckon it will be a good one. I already have a few zones marked on a map for where to go.
Do you guys spore print every single mushroom you find or do you just spore print 1 shroom out of every few that look the same? I think at the start i will spore print everything.

also - just quickly. there is a stroph (not sure of the full name) that looks very much like the P.Sub mushroom. Does anyone know of this mushroom and whether or not it is poisonous?

yeah, there are two common look-a-likes of the Subaeruginosa.
My names of the mushrooms might be off , but leitomyres ceres (spelled wrong for sure) or the stropharia, i don't know what it's called, but basically its the organge/red topped mushroom that looks like subs, and is an indicator species of subs. They are generally pretty flimsy, white stem, and white gils if im not mistaken (not sure on the gils though). They aren't toxic and wont kill you or anything, but i'm told they induce projective vomiting and pissing out ones anus, so obviously you want to avoid this. lol.
The main one to watch out for is the GALLERINA, this one is poisonous and can kill you via liver failure!!! this is the one that has a brown stem and brown gills, and a chocolatey brown spore print. avoid this one!!
luckily none of the above bruise blue or have a purple spore print.
Once you get more familiar with subs you'll notice that subs are generally a pretty sturdy and leathery mushroom. It doesn't fall apart easily. I can also even identify subs by the smell of them now. They have a distinct sort of smell to them.
But just take photos of everything you find, post them up on here, and wait for the Trusted Identifiers to give you the all clear. Thats how i leanred to pick them, Allan Rockerfeller ID'd my first batch of subs, and from there i knew what were the right one's to get and i was set.

mushrooms do funny things when they dry out while still growing.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Yeah thats actually what put me off picking them in the first place. I'd never seen that split before and just assumed they must be poisonous.
damn me. Although now i get to say that the very first mushrooms i found on my very first hunt were of the magic variety. to quote charlie sheen -winning.

that sort of splitting is common in and around mt dandynong's surrounding suburbs, on the borderline of society n bush. I'd eat them jus based on the photos, that bluing is fairly intense...my fungi sense is tingling. as soon as i find one that looks the same ill upload a photo...
